a* eeoond clast mall matter.
Perhaps the reason Santos-
Dumont cannot fly is beoause he
has a defective flue.
On account of previous engag-
merits Admiral Schley will not be
able to visit Fort Worth this fall.
The Dallas fair is bound to feel
the effects of the stringent times.
The attendance will not be near
as large, nor will those who do
attend remain as long or have as
much money to spend.
Another negro was burned at
the stake in Mississippi recently.
These little affairs are becoming
so common now-a-days that the
great metropolitan daifies almost
ignore theni entirely. No more
scare headlines and whoie pages
of space are devoted to these
awful affairs A small head and
a “stiok full" of solid matter is
now all that is demanded. We
hope the papers will see fit to cut
them out entirely.
Fort Worth proposes to pull off
a few attractions itself this fall.
Besides the city council's won-
derful flop on the social evil,Mr.
Pain will have his fire works,
Buffalo William and Ringling
Bros, will exhibit the elephant,
with its many lesser attractions,
followed by a street fair and the
oelebration of the completion of
the paokeries.
The oounoil meets Monday
night when the stook ordinance
will either be passed or laid on
the table again. Yesterday we
saw an alderman driving a wag-
on leaded with hay through town
followed by the town cow and a
large number, of her uninvited
guests. No, tney were not eat-
ing of the hay; they were just
following along peaceably behind
awaiting an opening. But we
will venture the assertion that
if the alderman had driven five
blocks farther the hay would
have so shrunken that there
would have been none left to un-
load.
Another Thru Train
to Kool Kolorado.
For about the tenth time a ru-
mor has been sent out to the
effeot that the big ooal strike has
almost been settled. We do not
think the operators will ever set-
tle the strike in .a satisfactory
manner to the strikers. New
men will gradually be employed
until the old foroe is entirely
eliminated. The longer the set-
tlement is delayed the more dif-
ficult it will be for the men to
win.
The people of Vernon agreed
to pay fifty thousand dollars for
a railroad from the north. The
road failed to reach that Pease
river town according to oontract
and now the bonus is not forth-
coming. By this little difference
the towir will not only lose the
shops and other substantial im-
provements that sometimes come
with a railroad, but it wittnever
receive the hearty cooperation of
the Frisco system. Better pay
it. It will be money to the town
in the long run. It never pays
to fight railroads.
With all her other troubles
Spain has a scandal in high life.
The kinglets mother, who was
until recently the queen regent,
has married Count Escosura,her
master of horse. In 8pain this
is called a morganatic marriage,
because the master of horse does
not rank with the queen. Not
long since the young king want-
ed to marry outside the royal
household, but his mother and
othet dignitaries would not hear
of it, and the king, in order to
hold his job, acquiesoed. Then
his mother got frisky and married
her ooachman, in American par-
lance, but in Spain they call him
master of horse.

The Fort Worth Register in its
advooacy of the poll tax amend-
ment# says voting is a privilege
and not a right. The Index does
not believe the man who penned
that sentenoe weighed hie words
with much care. It is a very
narrow man who will set himself
upon a pinnacle and say that hie
neighbor oannot vote because he
has been unfortunate and is not
able to produce a poll tax receipt
The large dailies are advocating
this amendment, perhaps, be-
cause it is popular with the rich.
The Iodex opposes it beoause we
think it wrong in principal. The
ball*,we contend, is a right, not
