Adds New Science Center

new science building is expected
to begin sometime this summer
as soon as final plans are com
pleted and bids arc secured Dr
Gordon Bennett president has
announced
Committee Agrees
On 20 Scholarships
McMurry s Scholarship Commit-
tee Tuesday afternoon agreed to
offer 20 $500 merit scholarships
which will be available to fresh
men entering next fall thus put-
ting into effect a $ 10 000 scholar-
ship appropriation set up by the
Budget Committee and approved
at the March 10 meeting of the
Board of Trustees
The scholarships which will
almost cover full tuition costs each
year will be divided as the com-
mittee sees fit among seven dis-
ciplines which committee mem-
bers felt need to be strengthened
and in which scholarships pro
vided by the college have not been
previously offered The depart
ments are chemistry biology
physics mathematics history
foieign languages and English
The scholui ships designed for
honor students will be granted on
the basis of (1) a students score
on the American College Test (2)

score on a test given by the do

qualifying grades on the ACT test
or minimum qualifying rank in
high school
To maintain his scholarship a
student must also be able lo hold
up a 2 5 overall grade average
going no lower than a 20 for one
semester He must also remain
in the discipline from which he
received his scholarship His
merit scholarship also replaces
any othei scholarship granted by
the college
If a student loses his scholar
ship he must reapply

are Boone and Pope of Abilene
Funds for the building arc
from a Texas wide money raising
campaign in which McMurry par-
ticipated along with four other
colleges of the Wesley Founda
tion McMurry s Board of Trus
tees have also voted to apply for
a federal grant of $240 000
The present design of the
building is the result of confer-
ences between architect Dan
Boone and McMurry professors
Dr Virgil Bottom Dr Norton
Jones and Dr John Hilhard
Although the idea of a science
building at McMurry is 15 years
old administrators postponed
constiuction until un adequate
science faculty became available
Dr Jones betan to look for ways
and means to build a science
building as early as 194U and six
yeais ago when Dr Bennett was
elected president the administm
