Conservatives are condemned
for holding onto ideas which are
not new Liberals pride them-
selves on having something new
and different SOCIALISM the
gateway to tomorrow But do
you remember the account where-
in Joseph brought into the hands
of Pharaoh the economy of Egypt
Socialsim is not new and it has
never really worked since the
time of Abraham
The last few weeks have wit-
nessed the quiet burial of a Rus-
sian government which had ap-
peared to be drifting toward hints
of free enterprise and they saw
England select tighter lids to be
clamped down on her own indus-
try It is true that the trend all
over the world smacks of social
ism But trends do not necessar-
ily always lead forwaid Let us
look now at the socialistic and the
capitalistic side of West Ger
many's experience since World
War II as was pointed out to me
by Wes Izzard editor of the
Amanllo Daily News
The state of Hesse is a center
of socialism which has icturned a
socialistic majority to its parlia-
ment at each election since the
wai In 1947 great was the rejoic-
ing of the Hessians when the vast
industrial complex known as the
Hessian Mining and Foundry
Works of Wetzlar was national-
ized and 74 of the capital
shares were taken over by the
state In the next 15 years 11 of
the company's 14 ore mines were
closed the labor force was re-
duced from 2 500 to 1400 and
losses in 1962 amounted to $1332 -000
But this was only the state
of Hesse the West Germans as a
whole chose the free enterprise
route or at least Ludwig Erhard
chose it for them
Ludwig Erhard now Chancel
lor was West Germany's first
economics minister Walter Hel-
lci now chief economics adviser
to Piesident Johnson was among
his American advisors When Er-
Imd came into the picture the
Gei man economy was limping
along Goods were scarce un-
cmplojmcnt high money inflat-
ed and the people apathetic
Cuntiols weie screwed down
tightly on cvcij thing
Then one Fnday night in 1948
when the government had closed
down ioi the weekend Erhard
oidiicd all government controls
lilted I'nce controls wage con-
tiols money controls cverj thing
weie wiped out At this it is
said that General Lucius Clay
head of the American Occupa-
tion Foiccs stiongly iepnmanded
Erhard ' Herr Eihard my ad-
visers tell me that you have made
a terrible mistake in removing
those controls " Erhard answer-
ed ' Don t let it worry you Gcn-
eial my advisers tell me the
same thing "
trom that moment the Ger-
mans began picking themselves
up off the floor Within a year
there was virtually no unemploy-
ment and the nation was launch-
ed into one of the most dynamic
booms in history under free en-
terprise But nations today including the
United States are tempted with
"turning over the cattle and land
to Pharaoh" with the idea that
maybe government can do it
better
But socialism does not only
clamp down lids on free enter-
prise it also clamps down lids
on fiec thought and individualism
of many varied sorts for socialism
has been known to produce
apathetic people (people who
would rather not think) and
apathetic people tend to perpetu-
ate n government which will keep
them in their apathy often a
socialistic government
The election polls reveal that a
great amount of the United States
citizenry is a people who would
like for someone to TAKE from
the HAVES in order to GIVE it
to in many cases US the HAVE-
NOTS In America today there
aie a large number of apathetic
conformist parasites eager to get
what they can from somebody
else in order to live "the easy
life " This is evidenced grossly
right here on our own campus by
the widespread acceptance and
participation in academic cheat-
ing Even those who are on the
GIVING end of the cheating are
in the wrong just are those on
the GIVING end in socialism for
what they are giving is of only
temporal value but what their
giving causes apathetic parasites
who know where to find their
next free meal has a far more
lasting effect
If this group is in the ma-
jority as it now appears to be
and if it can shake itself out of
its apathy long enough to realize
it had best get to the polls in
order to provide itself an unem-
ployment check for the next four
years then it will elect the
Champion HAVE who has
become the champion of the
HAVE-NOTS just recently (but
who certainly has no inten-
tion of losing any of his HAVE-
NESS for the sake of the HAVE-
NOTS) as the next President of
the United States and will no
doubt get what they want for at
least the next four years
But how long can government
hand-outs last and what kind of
men are they making of the
United States citizenry? And
what are our children and our
grandchildren going to do for
money if we continue to spend it
to take care of ourselves? Per-
haps we should have a little
deeper and less ingrown vision
I feel that the reason for this
widespread lack of responsibility
shouldering stems from the fact
that the Church has largely failed
to obtain more than a lip service
from most of its members Too
many people feel that religion is
really a good thing perhaps be-
cause it is somewhat comforting
when some close acquaintance
dies but when it gets to the
worldly issues of such practical-
ity as taking on difficult ethical
and moral responsibility to one's
neighbors it is honestly a little
OLD and RADICAL and won't
actually work for who can trust
his neighbor anyway' The gov-
ernment can keep the untrust-
worthy in neighbors in hand and
at the same time give us all the
security we need
Yes socialism is a little more
workable and a little more ex-
pediment It appears to be get-
ting us what we want right now
let's get more of it After all
everyone of us are living in
greater prosperity now than ever
before Are we? Is prosperity
measured in terms of inflationary
money which belongs to our
grandchildren? Have we as
Americans become so eaten up
with the ' easy way of life ' that
we measure success and prosper-
ity merely in terms of temporal
economic gains gains which

IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME October 31 may be the
night for goblins black cats and spooks but people pull pranks
and play jokes on others all year round not just at Halloween
The professor took out his small toy gun filled with blanks
to demonstrate how it worked to his secretary To his dis
appointment the gun would not go off As the secretary sat
waiting for a little sound from the gun which was about one
inch long a loud boom echoed throughout the room Mrs
Clyde Hernngton in the outer office dashed into the room
because she thought that someone had been shot There stood
Dr Llojd Huff chairman of the English department holding
his little toy gun which finally went off
THE MORE EARS THE BETTER TO HEAR WITH . . .
Dr Ricnard C von Ende walked into his office in the Fine
Arts Building just in time to catch Paulette Reid and Francis
Hinkcl holding the phone between them and listening in the
teceiver at the same time Contrary to all appearances they
were not eaves-dropping but they were merely listening to the
weather report
BASHFUL BAREFOOT BOY NOT SO BASHFUL! It
was hot in the Maedgen Building the other day so hot that
a certain person pulled off his shoes and socks and went
around around the office barefooted I do not want to men-
tion any names but I had better not find any more shoes and
