Welcome to the 114th Annual Meeting
WHAT A YEAR WE HAVE HAD, a year full of "firsts" for the Texas State Historical As-
sociation, and now it is time for all of us to make plans to gather in Dallas for the
2010 Annual Meeting held at the Marriott Quorum Hotel. During the year we cel-
ebrated the one-year anniversary of our move to and affiliation with the University of North
Texas in Denton, doubled our membership, and brought out the first Texas Almanac published
by the Association. We also undertook numerous major fund-raising efforts, including an on-
going annual campaign and successful applications to several foundations. Catch up on all
of the year's activities and also explore the Texas past and what it means in our time in the
sessions and special events planned for this year's meeting.
This year's forty-one sessions offer attendees the opportunity to engage in the study of the
past with leading authorities in Spanish Colonial and Mexican Borderlands, Texas Revolution,
Texas Republic, War with Mexico, Civil War, military history, Gilded Age-Progressive Era,
Tejano and Mexican American History, industrial history and ranching, museums and material
culture, women in Texas History, oral history, Civil Rights and African American History,
Texas politics, and the twentieth century. Joint sessions with the Texas Oral History Associa-
tion, the Texas Folklore Society, the Society of Southwest Archivists, the Texas Catholic History
Society, the Texas Baptist Historical Society, and the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society
are also planned.
Special events begin at noon on Thursday, March 4, with the Women in Texas History
Luncheon, where Angela Boswell will speak on "Texas Women, a History without Borders:
From Midland Minnie to the National Women's Conference," and the Liz Carpenter Award
will be presented. On Thursday evening, the Presidential Reception in the Pecan Room at
Old Parkland will welcome incoming TSHA President Dianne Powell.
Friday, March 5, begins with the Book Lovers' and Texana Collectors' Breakfast featuring
Darwin Payne's discussion of his book Quest for Justice: Louis A. Bedford Jr. and the Struggle
for Equal Rights in Texas. At noon, the Fellows Luncheon and Presentation of Awards will
recognize accomplishments in Texas History research.
This year, we will revive the famous Live Auction with J. P. Bryan reprising his role of auc-
tioneer in the late afternoon on Friday. Afterwards, we will gather for the Presidential Banquet
where I will address the topic of The TSHA and the Future of the Past.
As in previous years, workshops for the Handbook of Texas and the Quarterly and publica-
tions workshop, the business meeting, and the Walter Prescott Webb Society Annual Meeting
will also be held.
Throughout the meeting you can place bids in the Silent Auction, which includes private
tours, rare books, maps, and unique objects. Publications by some of the region's leading pub-
lishers of history and from rare book dealers will be for sale in the exhibit hall.
Special thanks go to the Program Committee that put together an entertaining and en-
lightening program: Chair Kenneth Hafertepe, with committee members Jerry Thompson,
Steve Hardin, Richard Lowe, John Miller Morris, Andres Tijerina, T. Lindsey Baker, Lynn
Denton, Stephanie Cole, Alex Pratt, and Tai Kreidler. As always, this program would not be
possible without the tremendous effort they put forth. Please note the generous contributions
to the annual meeting by our sponsors, whose names are listed on the preceding page. Once
again our TSHA staff has done an outstanding job both over the course of the year and in
putting together this meeting. When you see them, please take the time to thank them.
May you enjoy the meeting and come away with a renewed commitment to the study of
Texas history.
WALTER L.BUENGER
TSHA PRESIDENT 2009-20I0
