Joe grew up in Kerrville and graduated from Tivy High School. He got academic scholarships to Sul Ross and the University of Texas. After completing his sophomore year in college, he still didn't know what he wanted to do with his life, so he went down to the Air Force Recruiter and enlisted. He spent eight years in the Air Force as an Air Rescue Medic in Vietnam and Southeast Asia and flew in 192 combat missions. At the end of his enlistment he asked if he could transfer to the Officer Training School and was told he wasn't college material, so he got out of the Air Force and went back to school. He got his bachelor's degree, master's degree and finished up by getting his PHD. He has taught at a couple of University's and has traveled to several countries as a visiting Professor. He retired as Professor Emeritus of the College of Architecture at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where he served as the Associate Dean. He is married to the love of his life and has two great children. He has lived a very fulfilling
