WAR WHOOP
Summer Edition
Offense Keynote for Fall Season
Forty-five candidates will re-
port to head football coach Grant
Tcaff September 1 for fall work-
outs. "The keynote for 1966 will
be offensive and scoring" said
Tcaff.
With the majority of the defen-
sive unit returning the main
emphasis will be on offense. The
team will use many "pro-sets"
and "I" formations.
Halfbacks David Bonds Stan-
ley Austin and Freddie Walker
wcie lost by graduation. Out-
standing middle linebacker Car-
los Mainord will return as a stu-
dent coach helping tutor co-captain
Joe Coffer a junior from
Borgcr who will plug up the
holes from that position.
During spring training some
changes were made to improve
the offensive unit. Tommy
Bumis a 0-4 junior from Gail
moved from defensive end to of-
fensive tackle will be a strong
prospect for this starting position.
Gary Pittard weighing 200 and
standing 6-2 moved to offensive
wingback; and Chester Dough-
erty sophomore from Perryton
and Hoger Stansbury a junior
remained as ends. Stansbury
weighing 212 is an excellent pass
leceiver. A junior from Jayton
Harold Murrell could be starting
tackle opposite Burrus. The 6-5
215-pound player is a good offen-
sive blocker especially in pass
piotection.
At center will be Gordon Hube-
nak a Ft. Worth sophomore who
added a lot of strength to this
position during his freshman year.
He is 6-1 and weighs 215. Added
depth at center will be provided
by Jackie Narrel from Lorainc
and John Anderson from Ft.
Worth both good offensive cen-
ters. Narrel a 5-10 200-pound
senior will be playing some at
guard position
Snyder senior Tim Marcum
last year's starting quarterback
will start again this year. Mar-
cum's desire to win will make up
for his lack in size. He is 5-10
and weighs 165 A freshman from
Winters Hichard Puckett could
possibly help at the quarterback
position before the year is over.
Replacing Konnic Green one
of the top college backs rushing-
wise on the offensive unit is
Gene Murrell co-captain.
Adding much depth at tailback
position will bo Sidney McCowan
freshman from Miles. He will be
accompanied by 5-11 185-pound
Scottie Pruitt and 5-11 165-pound
Ken Dcckard. Deckard a senior
fiom Kermit will alternate at
split back and tailback.
Moved from the defensive unit
to the offensive guard position is
Terry Mclver 6' 207-pound junior
fiom Santa Anna.
Others for the Indian team are
fullbacker Milfrcd Wiley a fresh-
man from Ballinger weighing 175
pounds; Tom Kinrnid sophomore

in at 105; Jim Stovall senior of-
fensive guard position with 210
pounds;

165 pound guard from Vidor; El-
dorado sophomore Bobby Halbert

pound linebacker; Stanley Moore

splitback. He weighs 170 pounds.

Weatherford is a 210 pound start-
ing defensive end; Amarillo jun-
ior Harlan Sellers plays both of-
fensive and defensive weigh-
ing 185 pounds; "Tally" Windham
a sophomore from Baird is a right
linebacker weighing 220 pounds;
a sophomore Tructt Roberts from
Abilene will start either offen-
sively or defensively at end.

By GENE PATTY
Sporis Information Director
Sports writers throughout the
Lone Star Conference congratu-
lated McMurry College for the
fine job of planning and staging
the 48-hour Lone Star Conference
Track and Field Tennis and Golf
meet held here last spring.
Hats off to Ronnie Gile's tennis
team led by Ronnie Fulwiler and
Robert Darden by providing the
Indians with a "major upset" in
the LSC meet when they tied de-
fending titlist East Texas State
and Southwest Texas State for
the conference championship.
Freddie Fox one of McMurry's
finest athletes had his day at the
track and field meet when he
jumped 26 ft. 2 inches in exhibi-
tion. He was not eligible to com-
pete for the college last season.
Keep your eyes on Freddie Fox
this fall when he dons a football
uniform for the first time in his
life and joins the "Fighting In-
dians" in the defensive backficld.
Freddie journeyed to Houston
in early June as a member of the
McMurry Track Club and entered
the U. S. Track and Field District
Federation Meet at Butler Field.
He won the broadjumping event
with a 26 ft. 1 inch jump. He
also won the triple jump with a
48 ft. flat.
More recently July 16 Fox en-
tered the Abilene Invitational
Track and Field Meet held at
ACC and jumped 25 ft. 8" for a
second place loosing only to for-
mer McMurry great Bill Miller.
Miller went on to jump 47 ft. 4"
in the triple jump.
It would be interesting to see
these two men jump it out in an
appropriate exhibition.
SIX AND EIGHT MAN football
clinic is to be held in rebuilt In-
dian Stadium from August 8 until
13. Two football games and one
basketball game using the all
stars will be played. The bas-
ketball game will be played
Thursday August 11 in Cooper
Gym followed by the six man
game on Friday afternoon and the
eight man game on Saturday
afternoon. Both games will be
played in Indian Stadium.
September 1 marks the official
opening of the 1966 football sea-
son. September 2 marks the day
when trainer Danny Cravens
breaks out the bottle of liniment
and sooths the tired and aching
muscles. Our first home game
will be with ACC on Oct. 1. See
you in September and lets all root
for the "FIGHTING INDIANS"
of 1966.
