the score was 14-0 midway in the

The Lions' last tally came in
the final period when they

The touchdown came on a five

Sam Houston State bounds
into Abilene for a game Saturday
and the Indians hope to feast on
Bcarkat stew as their Homecom-
ing meal.
Both squads will be seeking to
rebound from their last outings
when the Tribe was beaten by
East Texas and Sam Houston tied
Howard Payne.
The Bearkats will carry a 2-1-1
record into the fray. Their lone
defeat came at the hands of Troy
State of Alabama. McMurry
stands 3-1 on the season. The
teams have one common opponent
Tarleton State. Sam Houston
felled the Texans 28-7 while the
Indians buried the Stcphcnville
troops 58-7 in the season opener.
The SHS offense is led by sop-
homore quarterback David Ku-
biak. He is complimented by a
junior transfer student James
Awood who is a 170 pound tall-
back. Awood has picked up 246
yards rushing averaging 5.8
yards per carry and has scored
four touchdowns.
Punter Mike Murray is an of-
fensive weapon in his own right.
He has kicked 30 times for a fine
43.9 yard average. In last week's
game with Howard Payne Mur-
ray booted 10 times for a 46.8
yard average including one punt
that traveled 63 yards.
A stingy rushing defense and
an alert secondary have led the
Bearkats thus far. The Hunts-
ville boys must have taken les-
sons in the thievery from the in-
mates at the state penitentiary
for they have stolen 13 passes in
four games. Sticky-fingered de
fensive back Stan Labay leads the
team with five interceptions. The
defensive line is anchored by 260
pound tackle George Wright a
second-team all-conference selec-
tion last season.
The McMurry rushing defense
ranked number one in the nation
by the NAIA last week took a
statistical beating at Commerce
Saturday. The Indians are now
giving up 54 5 yards a game rush-
ing while compiling 240.8 yards
a game overland themselves.
McM racks up 293.3 yards total
offense a game while allowing the
opposition 212 steps per contest.
Joe Gillespie continues to be
the leading rusher with 311 yards
gained but Richard Puckett is
only 24 yards behind the Cole-
man ex. Punter John Williams
is averaging 40.1 yards per kick
after 24 efforts.
