A newly-organized woman’s
club named itself the “Progres-
sive Women’s League’’ last Wed-
nesday afternoon when officers
were installed.
A business session of the group
was also held at^tihe home of
Mrs. Bob Sallee.
Officers .installed were Mrs.
John S. Nelson, president; Mrs.
Larry Stapp, vice president;
Mrs. Bill Parrish, secretary and
Mrs. Bill Henry, treasurer.
Installing officers were Mrs.
Edgar H. Eggert Jr., Mrs. John
Tobin, Mrs. Dan Baen, Mrs.
Griff Moore, Mrs. W. C. Young
and Mrs. A1 Flory. They pre-
sented corsages to the new of-
ficers.

Mrs. Loyd Mengers was honor-
ed with a surprise housewarm-
ing at her new home in Mimosa
Village Wednesday, Feb. 15.
Hostesses were Mrs. Woodrow
Hicks, Mrs. Nelson Gregory,
and Mrs-. Malcolm A. Maedgen.

yellow linen cloth and held a
centerpiece of calendulas.

Study Club
A program on Club and Fed-
eration Day was presented at
the meeting of, the Mathis
Study Club Wednesday, Feb.
15. The meeting was held at
the Ranch Motel Restaurant.
Mrs. R. L. Miller was program
chairman assisted by Mrs. Mor-
gan Porter, Mrs. L. T. Porter
and Mrs. B. C. Holmes.
The table was decorated in
green and gold. Refreshments
of pie ala mode and coffee were
served the 14 members attend-
ing.
'Across Bridge'
For Sandia WMU
Mrs. Herbert Lafield brought
the devotional and the study on
“Across the Bridge” at the
meeting of the Woman’s Mis-
sionary Union Wednesday night,
Feb. 15, ait the First Baptist
Church of Sandia.
The opening prayer was giv-
en. by Mrs. Gerald Petty who
also gave the call to prayer for
the Passionaries.
I Mrs. Ben Cox led in repeat-
ing the watchword, 2nd. Cor. 5-
14, and presided at the business
meeting.
The meeting closed with sen-
tence prayer. Eight members
and one visitor, Mrs. Anna Gour-
ley of Pcttteet, attended.

Beliefs' Is Study
For WSCS Tuesday
Mrs. J. J. Baker will be the
study leader at the meeting of
the Woman’s Society of Chris-
tian Service Tuesday, Feb. 28,
at the Methodist Church.
The study will be a continua-
tion of “Basic Christian Beliefs”
which began on Feb. 21.

State Rep
Miss West
Lloyce West, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Jim West of Sandia,
is one of four students elected
by the San Marcos Academy
student council to attend the
state meet in Odessa, March
25, 26 and 27.
The group will attend the busi-
ness meetings and election of
state officers. Social activities
will include a swimming -party
Friday night and a banquet Sat-
urday night.
The expenses of the students
attending the meet will be paid
by the student council.

PTA Program
A general business meeting of
the Junior High PTA was held
at the school library, Tuesday
night, Feb. 14.
Bryon Felder, band director,
presented two ensembles at the
■meeting. Members of the first
clarinet quartet were Susan
Knolle, . Janis Beard, Dee Ann
Williams and “Teeter” Tennill.
In the second clarinet group
were Kathy Holmes, Lynn Boat-
wright, Nancy Teague and Dee
Watson.
Hostesses for the meeting were
Mrs. Gerald Luther, Mrs- S. W.
Seiler, Mrs. Bill Wenta, Mrs.
Jerry Stone, Mrs. E. B. Masur,
Mrs. Leonard Luther, and 'Mrs.
Gordon Brown.
The table was laid with red
net over a taffeta cloth and
the centerpiece was in the val-
entine theme. The base was
covered with red and white net
with roses and a white orchid.
An open heart held a silhouette
of a boy and girl.
Refreshments of valentine
muffins, valentine candy, cof-
fee, orange and colas were serv-
ed.

The Auxiliary drove to the
South Texas Children’s home
near Beeville Saturday, Feb. 18.
Following the visit here, they
stopped in Beeville for a ska-
ting party and held a picnic at

A “Texas Day” program is
planned for the meeting of the
'Mathis Study Club Wednesday,
March 1, at the home of Mrs.
H. W. McNeill.
Mrs. J. R. McGuffin, program
chairman, will speak on “Pio-
neer Texas Homes.”
Co-hostess for the meeting will
be Miss Estelle Montgomery.

Grading System In
Schools Discussed
At Intermediate PTA
E. B. Masur, superintendent
of the Mathis schools, was guest
PTA meeting Tuesday, Feb. 11.
He spoke briefly on “Gene-
ral Accreditation” and discuss-
ed the present system of grad-
ing students in the Mathis
Schools and his plans for chang-
ing the grading system.
Approximately 35 members at-
tended the meeting.
Brotherhood Plans
Supper, Film Monday
The Baptist Brotherhood will
hold a covered dish supper Mon-
day night at 7:30 and see a mov-
ie.
A film on science develop-
ment is being sought for the pro-
gram.
VFW Auxiliary
Met Thursday
The Ladies Auxiliary to VFW
Posit 3079 held a regular meet-
ing Thursday night, Feb. 16, at
the post home. Mrs. Jack Buck,
president, was in charge of the
meeting.
Refreshments of doughnuts
and coffee wme served to 15
members attending. Miss Doro-
thy Brown and Mrs. Erich
Bauch were hostesses.
'Women In Gov'ment'
BPW Topic Feb. 28th
“Women In Government” will
be the topic of the Business and
Professional Woman’s Club mee-
ting Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the
Mathis Beauty Shop.
Mrs. Billie Cox will be ill
charge of the program.
Youth Fellowship
Holds Thursday
Morning Session
This Thursday morning the
Youth Fellowship of the First
Baptist Church will hold ano-
ther in its series of meetings.
The group meets from 7:30
to 8:15 every other Thursday
morning.
PTA Meets
To Kickoff
School Week
The meeting of the General
P|TA, March 6, will be the kick-
off meeting for Public School
Week. It will be held in the
school cafeteria at 7:30 p.m.
E. B. Masur, superintendent of
the Mathis Schools, will give a
report of the findings of the
Accreditation Committee who
visited the schools last week.
All PTA members and par-
ents are invited to attend the
meeting.
Deputy Grand
Matron Visits
OES Tuesday
The official visit of Deputy
Grand Matron Sophia Merts,
District 5, Section 9, of the
Grand Chapter of Texas, Or-
der of Eastern Star, was made
to the Mathis chapter Tuesday
night.
Her visit was preceeded by
a dinner at the Ranch Motel
Restaurant. Following the for-
mal meeting refreshments were
served.
Band Boosters
To Pay Fee At
UIL Contests
The members of the Band Boo-
sters Club voted to pay the en-
trance fee for the Mathis band
to eriter the UIL regional con-
test at Kingsville, March 18
and 18. They also voted to pay
the fee for entry in the Buc-
caneer Music Festival in Cor-
pus Christi in May.
The decisions were made at
the meeting Thursday night,
Feb. 16, alt) the band hall.
Ten members attended the
meeting.
Bill Lasater Has
Seventh Birthday
Bill 'Lasalter, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Lasater, was honor-
ed with a party at the VFW post
home Thursday, Feb. 16. The
occasion was his seventh birth-
day.
The guests played indoor
games.

4-H Club Plans
Dress Review
The members of the 4H club
Voted to change the club name
to the Mathis 4H Community
Club at the meeting Tuesday
night, Feb. 14.
The girls made plans for a
dress review which will be' held
March 19. A workshop will be
held at the scout hut, Feb. 25, to
prepare for the review.
The members worked on the
record books concerning their
different projects.
Refreshments of cookies and
colas were served to 23 mem-
bers and parents attending the
meeting.

Rev. James Franklin of the
First Baptist Church will attend
the South Texas Bible Confer-
ence at the University of Cor-
pus Christi Monday and Tues-
day of next week.
Will Goodwin is ill at his home
in Sandia.
Feb. 13 - A girl was born to
Mr. and Mrs. Reynado Cava-
zoz, of Orange Grove. She weigh-
ed 8 lbs. and 3 ozs.
Feb. 14 - A girl was born to
Mr. and Mrs. Ramon Espinoza
of Orange Grove. She weighed
7 lbs. and 4 ozs.
Feb. 16 - A boy was born to
Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Gonzales
of Sandia. He weighed 6 lbs.
Feb. 19 - A boy was born to
Mr. and Mrs. Victoriano Her-
nandez of Mathis. He weighed
6 lbs. and 11 ozs.
Feb. 19 - A boy was born to
Mr. and Mrs. Raul Montelongo
of Sinton. He weighed 5 lbs-

Feb. 20 - A boy was bom to

Luncheon
The Mathis Hook Rug Club
had its annual luncheon and
election of officers Saturday,
Feb. 18, at the Ranch Motel
Restaurant.
New officers elected were Mrs.
Mae Stone, president; Mrs. A.
G. Smith, secretary-treasurer;
and Mrs. Ethel Freasier, wool
chairman.

guests attended the meetin r.
The guests attending were Mrs.
Henry McNabb, Mrs. Carrie
Redmond of Van Wert, Iowa,
Mrs. Ben Gloeckner, Mrs. Hen-
