Band Near Goal
Of $2,000 For
State Fair Trip
The Mathis Band had come
within $100 of its $2,000 goal to
finance a trip to the State
Fair in Dallas Oct. 9-12, Direc-
tor Bryon Felder said Tuesday
afternoon.
Some costs for the light bulbs
must be deducted before the
grand total is announced. There
are still a few packages of
light bulbs to be sold.
The band last August start-
ed raising funds to accept an
invitation to parade and play
at the fair this fall. The school
board started off the fund with
a $500 contribution. The rest of
the money has been raised by
a variety of projects.

For BPW Tuesday
Mrs. Lucy Todd will give the
program on “Membership” for
the Business and Professional
Women's Club when it meets
next Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the
Mathis Beauty, Shop. Mrs. Wal-
ter Humble is the program
chairman.
Mrs. Jack Berry will be in
charge of the business meeting.
Royal Service
For Mathis WMU
The Women’s Missionary Un-
ion of the First Baptist Church
will meet at the church next
Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. for busi-

Prayer Topic
For WMU Circles
The Women's Missionary Un-
ion of the First Baptist Church
met last Tuesday afternoon at
the church for a program on
“Prayer for State Missions"
with Mrs. Claude Morrison as
program leader.
The three circles of the WMU
met together.
Others taking part on the pro-
gram were Mrs. Percy Hart-
man, Mrr. J' W. Nelson, Mrs.
J. D. Roach, Mrs. Jack Rob-
ertson and Mrs. B. S. Whitaker.
About 12 members attended

New President
Of Dorcas Class
Mrs. Ray West was elected
president of the Dorcas Sunday
School Class of the First Bap-
tist Church when it met last
Wednesday afternoon in the
home of Mrs. Bill Holmes.
Hostesses were Mrs. J. S.
Groom and Mrs. Claude Caf-
fall.
Other officers are Mrs. Clif-
ton Berry vice-president; Mrs.
E. J. Crenshaw, secretary-trea-
surer; and Mrs. Groom, assis-
tant secretary.
Mrs. Holmes gave the devo-
tional.
Refreshments of cake and cof-
fee were served by the hostess-
es to Mrs. Holmes. Mrs. Cren-
shaw, Mrs. Jess Hollon, Mrs.
Nelson- Gregory, Mrs. DonStone,
Mrs. West, Mrs. J. M. Edmond-
son, Mrs. J. D. Roach, and
Mrs. Frank Dehnisch.

Literary Club
Program Wed.
A program on “Hawaii and
Alaska” was given for the Ma-
this Literary Club when it held
its first meeting last Wednes-
day afternoon in the Mesquite
Room of Crawford’s. Mrs. W.
E. McDonald was the program
leader.
-Mrs. Dan Bean gave a talk
on “Vacationing in Alaska” and
Mrs. Walter Leber, Jr. gave
a talk on “Vacationing in Ha-
waii.”
Hostesses were Mrs. Joe Dic-
kerson and Mrs. Hartwell Dobie.
The table was laid with a
white linen cloth and the center-
piece was a brown igloo and
a fall arrangement. Other decor-
ations were leis and gold nug-
gets. Refreshments were pie,
coffee and mints.
There were 16 members and
two guests, Mrs. Wayne Atzen-
hofer and Mrs. Robert Mickler,
were present.
WMU Study From
Course Book
Mrs. Herbert Lafield gave the
study from the WMU Studyy
Course Book for the Women’s
Missionary Union of the First
Baptist Church at Sandia when (
it met last Wednesday night at'
the church.
Mrs. Ben Cox opened the meet-
ing with prayer. Mrs. Cox was
in charge of the business meet-
ing.
Mrs. Bert Williford closed the
meeting with prayer.
There were nine members
present.
Federation Day
For Culture Club
Mrs. C. M. Porter will be
hostess to the Mathis Culture
;Club when it meets next Wed-
nesday afternoon at four. Co-
hostesses will be ‘Mrs. Milby
Porter, Mrs. Bob Wehmeyer and
Mrs. Milton Boatwright.
The club will observe Federa-
tion Day. Mrs. Glenn Dorris,
president, will give the welcome.
Mrs. C. N. Freeman is the pro-
gram leader. Others taking part
on the program and their topics
are Mrs. Laura Messer, “At-
tendance”; and Mrs. Johnny
Crouch, “Club Tonic.”
13 Attend WSCS
Alcohol Study
Miss Katherine Knolle gave
the first of the two part study
on “Alcohol and Christian Res-
ponsibility,” for -the Women’s
Society of Christian Service
when it met Tuesday afternoon
at the First Methodist Church.
Miss Estelle Montgomery
gave the other part on the pro-
gram, “It Is Not Necessary,”
and Mrs. J. F. Bonham read
the scripture.
There were 13 members and
one visitor, Mrs. Fisher of Lu-
ling, attended.

Honored Sunday
A family dinner at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold McCraw
honored five on their birthdays.
Honorees were Mrs. Lillie Mc-
Craw, Norma McCraw, Harold
Dennis of Corpus Christi, Arnold
McCraw, and T. M. Cornwell
of Sinton.
Those attending were Mr
and Mrs. McCraw, Joe Wolff
and O. T. Christian- both of Wes-
laco and Mr. and Mrs. McCraw

Auxiliary Will
Be Hostesses to
District Meeting
The local Ladies Auxiliary of
VFW Post 3079 will be hostesses
to the District 6 Auxiliary con-
vention this Saturday and Sun-
day at the VFW Hall.
The auxiliary met last Thurs-
day night at the VFW Hall with
Mrs. Jack Buck in- charge of the
meeting. The auxiliary voted to
buy folding doors for the post
home.
Among those attending the
meeting Saturday and Sunday
will be Mrs. Joyce Salm, the
department president; Mrs.
Frances McCumber, District
president; and Mrs. Afflerbach,
wife of the department coman-
der. The business meeting will
be held Sunday in- the Mesquite
Room of Crawford’s.

Makes Year Plans
The Mathis High School 'Par-
ent-Teachers’ Assn, group held
its first meeting Monday night
in the school library with 24
members present.
Mrs. Walter Leber, Jr., chair-
man was in charge of the meet-
ing. iThe group voted to meet the
second Thursday of each month
in the school library at 7:30 p.m.
Mr,s. Ed Knolle was in charge
of the program. Charles Miller
spoke to the group on “Purpose
and Aims of the PTA.” Mrs.
ILeber discussed the plans for
the year. There was a round-
table discussion on the problems.
The teachers were introduced
to the parents and the parents
were introduced to the teachers.
The teachers were told which
student belonged to which par-
ent.

Officers Today
The Ruth Sunday School class
will elect officers when it meets
today (Thursday) in the home of
Mrs. Earl Ramsower. Mrs. Ja-
mes Wright will be the co-hos-
te.
Mrs. Clifton Jennings will bring
the devotional. They will meet
at 4 p. m. The class has not met
during the summer. This will be
the first meeting. The class is
scheduled to meet the fourth
Thursday of each month at 4 p.
m.

Three Mathis reserves have
been called to active duty with
orders to report the latter part
of September. These are Ben
Rushing, West Ward teacher,
Fernando Lopez, local merchant,
and Avelino Gutierres.
Abe M. Katz Co., growers and
shippers, have closed their oper-
ation in Robstown, and are mov-
ing their vegetable washing and
crate making equipment to the
city of Mathis, according t o
Glenn Dorris, local manager for
the firm.
The gin season was complet-
ed this week with 1,891 bales of
cotton going through the local
gin- this year. This figure cof-
pares with the 7,400 bale cotton
crop last year and the normal
run of about 3,500 bales.
A student council for the school
term 1950-51 was elected by the
students at Mathis High School
this week. Dickie Gray was elec-
ted president; Harold Winsauer,
vice-president; Margaret Ann
Fusselman, reporter; and Meri-
lyn McNeill, secretary-treasurer.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Frank Mun-
sell of Jasper have announced
the engagement and approach-
ing marriage of their daughter,
Sarah Francis, to William C.

Hollingsworth of Mathis.
Mrs. A. B. Holmes was named
honoree at a cola party and a
shower on Tuesday morning. The
hostesses were Mrs. R. T. Rich,
Mrs. Vernon-Adams, Mrs. W. G.
Cabaniss. The party was given
in the home of Mrs. J. Li Nor-
ris.
The light shower that Mathis
had during the week-end brought
slight comfort to a community
that is away behind its annual
rainfall.
Mrs. Curtis Caffall, Mrs. Lola
Allen, Mrs. M. B. Covington,
Mrs. Glen Haley and Miss Cor-
delia Brown- are taking an ex-
tension course given by A&I at
Alice each M o nday evening.
Mrs. Caffall and Mrs. Allen also
return on Thursday night for a
course. Those teachers going to
the A&I campus each Saturday
for work include Mrs. Glen Hal-
ey, Mr. and Mrs. Griff Moore,
Mrs. Vernon Harville, Mrs. Ger-
ald Crisp, and Mary Margaret
Edmondson.
Marvin McEachern, who re-
cently enlisted in the U. S. Navy,
will leave Mathis for boot train-
ing in San Diego. McEachern,
who is the son of Mr. and Mrs!
H. L. McEachern of Mathis, en-
listed in the Navy on September
7.
Mrs. Meyer Is
New President
Of Church Group
The Women’s Missionary So-
ciety of the St. Paul Lutheran
Church held its monthly meet-
ing last Thursday afternoon at
the church with 23 members and
the pastor, Rev. Norman Dom-
quast, present.
Mrs. E. H. Salge opened the
meeting with scripture reading
and prayer.
The Bible Study was led by
the pastor.
Officers elected for the coming
year are Mrs. H. F. Meyer,
president; Mrs. Jarvis Thor-
mahlen, vice-president; Mrs.
Marvin Buetow, secretary; and
Mrs. I. A. Burow, treasurer.
A social period followed the
business meeting. Mrs. Otto He-
dtke served refreshments.
The Thankoffering Depart-
ment Service will be held in
connection with the next regular
meeting on Oct. 20 at 2:30 p.m.

Bride-To-Be
Miss Adelaida Gancerez. bri-
de-elect of Robert Mendoza, was
honored with a miscellaneous
shower in the Mesquite Room
of Crawford’s last Thursday
The table was laid with a

with a green and white arrange-
ment. Refreshments of pink-
punch and cake were served.
Mrs. Lupe Gancerez, mother
of the bride, poured the punch,
and Mrs. Jesus Padella, mother
of the groom, served the cake.
Miss Adelita Gancerez was
at the guest register.
IThe wedding will take place
Sunday, Sept. 25, at the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church.
Soft music was played throu-
ghout the evening. About 30
attended.
Hostesses were Mrs. Juan
Farias, Miss Audelia Rodriguez,
Miss Soila Martinez, and Miss
Jesusa Hinojosa.
WMU Circles Have
Mission Studies
The three circles of the Wo-
men's Missionary Union of the
First Baptist Church met in
seperate homes Tuesday for
Mission Study.
The Ruth Everley Hayes Cir-
cle met at the home of Mrs.
Garland Hollon. Mrs. Austin
Nelson gave the study. There
were five members present.
■Mi’s. Rose Hollon was hos-
tess to the Edith Crane Circle
when it met Tuesday morning.
The study was given by Mrs.
Bob Dehnisch. There were three
members present.
The Babara Cunningham Cir-
cle met at the home of Mrs.
Percy Hartman Tuesday after-
noon with 12 members present.
Mrs. J. W. Nelson lead the
study.
Intermediate GA
Changes Meeting
The Intermediate Girl’s Aux-
iliary of the First Baptist
Church changed their meeting
date from Tuesday afternoon
at four to Monday afternoons
at 5:15.
They met Tuesday afternoon
with Judy Pullin in charge of
the meeting. The program was
on “Stewardship.” Mrs. L. B.
Pullin closed the meeting with
a prayer.
Refreshments of ice cream
and colas were served to six
members.
Community Mission
Program For WMU
The Women’s Missionary Un-
ion of the First Baptist Church
at Sandia will have a Commun-
ity Missions program when it
meets next Wednesday.
They will meet at 7 p.m. at
the church.
Tynan News
The Tynan Social Circle con-
vened after a summer vacation
with an all day meeting at the
home of Mrs. Emile Mengers
last Thursday. Twelve members
and two guests, Mrs. Gus Men-
gers and Mrs. Pearl Cox were
present.
After a business session, led
by Mrs. H. W. McNeill, a cover-
ed dish luncheon- was served.
During the day the members
worked on a quilt. The next
meeting will be on Oct. 12.
The Tynan Recreation Club
had a hobo party for members
and guests Sunday afternoon.
Most came dressed as hobos.
The best dressed hobo ana die
old fashioned hobo winners were
Mrs. Atheas Chopelas, for the
women; Myron Carlson, for the
men; Katherine Lohse, for the
girls; and Martin A. Schubert,
Jr., for the boys.
Hobo stew was served for sup-
per.
The Peace E&R Church is
having a Preaching Mission Oct.
9-11-13. Rev. Gerald Cobb. Ben
Arnold, will be the speaker.
Members and the community
are invited to attend. Services
start at 7:30 p.m.
