Mr. and Mrs. Smith came to
Brownwood in 1882 from Kentucky
and at that time there was only one
school house here and not a church
building in the village. Mr. 8mlth
joined the Baptist church In Ken-
tucky. He was born in Lyon county
February 27," 1843. and spent his
boyhood on his father’s plantation, j
Mr. Smith joined the Confederate
army October 28. 1861, at Hopkins-'
of the Blghth Kentucky. He fought
through the war, .seeing much action. {
until within a few months of Its
close when he end a brother became
separated from their oompany and
was forced to surrender.
Many old people from all the sur-
