DELAWARE, Ohio* Mkrch 5-
(UP)—Ohio Wesleyan University
students have begun a “battle of
the books" to combat Communist
propaganda in low-cost text books
subsidised by the Russian govern-
ment in other nations.
Dr. Robert E. Shanklin, assistant
geology professor, said the idea
began with Dr. Shannon MsOun*
of Colgate University, now a visit-
ing professor st ths University of
Tokyo, who wrote to him shout
the many bookshops flooded with
cheap Communist texts. He said
American texts were available to
the students, but that they cost
abou IS times as much. He urged
that a program be launched to
make American booke available to
the Japanese at low cost.
Dr. Sht-klin passed the Idea
along to his students. They erected
potters and passed, out handbills
urging ail students to donate the
textbooks they would otherwise
sell a the end of each semester
to Japan.
Dr. McCune has promised to give
the books he receives to students
at his and other Japanese univer-
sities st s nominal fee of about SO
cents apiece. With the proceeds he
hss promised to buy Japanese
books, journals or maps and send
them to the students who donated
the American texts.
