BAYTOWN
WASHINGTON, Aug, 5 (l?)— The
Air Force may next turn to nilot-
less planes to guard the nation’*
shores against enemy bo.no--..,.
The Air Force, it was learned,
is considering production of two
Supersonic pilotless interceptor
planes and a supersonic jet bom-
ber.
A spokesman said the Air Force
could nbt "confirm or deny’’ this
information, although he conceded
there were development contracts
for the interceptor models.
. The proposed use of pilotless in-
terceptors reflects the view of
aeronautical scientists that pilots
are becoming “unnecessary fear
tures” for air defense flying. In
the modern interceptor, the pilots
go along as monitors of the elec-
tronic equipment that automatical-
ly seeks out the invading plane,
"locks onto" it by means of radar
and fires the guns and rockets.
The pilotless planes would be
guided by radar and radio, simi-
larly to the guided missiles now-
under development by the armed
forces.
The supersonic jet bomber, now
under discussion would be the na-
tion’s first with a speed greater
than that of sound and is regarded
as the logical next step after the
Boeing B-52 jet bomber, presently
the ace in the Air Force’s bombing
fleet. Production, however, has
just started on the 600-mile-an-hour
B-52 and they probably will not be
in combat units for another two
years.
The supersonic bomben would be.
produced several, years hence at
the Fort Worth, Tex., plant of Con-
solidated Vultee Aircraft Corpf,
where the B-36, the workhorse of
the intercontinental bombing fleet,
is now being made. The Air Force
has Announced it will place no new
orders for B-36s and that their pro-
duction will probably end in 1954.
The pilotless interceptors are the
Boeing Airplane Co. XF-99 Bow-
mark and the Hughes Aircraft Co.
XF-98 Falcon. Both are now in pro-
