Initial Tip-Off One Week Away
By Kit Kimbrcll
The McMurry Indians find
themselves in n unique situ-
ation this yenr ns the lid is
about to be opened on the
1976-77 basketball season.
For the fourth consecutive
year the Indians will be
competing in the Texoma
Athltic Conference; but the
Indians arc also members of
the Texas Intercollegiate
Athletic Association (TIAA)
and will play in a conference
tournament ofter the regular
season ends in February. So
what all that mennB is that
the Indians are members of
two different conferences ut
the same time something
which is actually a first
Well what do the Indians
have forward to look to this
season? Head basketball
coach Hcrshcl Kimbrell says
"I think personnel-wise we
will be better than last year
but that doesn't mean we will
win any more games than we
did last year." The Indians
finished last season with a
8-18 record the worst since
1971-72
What the Indians do have
to look forward to this year is
the fact that three starters
from lust year's tcom are re-
turning. NAIA All-DistrictS
first team forward and Tex-
oma Athletic Conference
first team forward Larry
Gibson returns along with
postmen David Nelson and
Jon House.
Gibson n senior one-year
lettcrman from Houston
Storing wob the Indians'
leading scorer last year with
a 20.4 game average and lost
the TAC scoring title by
five-tenths of n point to Way-
land BaptiBt's Arthur Jack-
son. Nelson a junior two-year
letterman from Odessa Per-
mian grabbed a career-high
256 rebounds last season and
averaged 9.9 caroms a game.
Nelson was selected
"Freshman of the Year" in
the TAC in 1974-75. Hehad a
12.9 per game scoring aver-
age in 1975-76. The 6-7
postman's career highs are
31 points and 17 rebounds in
a game.
House a senior one-year
lettcrman from Oklahoma
City joined the Indians at
mid-season last year and
proceeded to average 8.3
points per game and 5.5 re-
bounds per game in the last
half of the season. House
6-9 transferred from
Grayson County Junior Col-
lege. His career highs arc 22
points and 13 rebounds.
Other returning squad-
men from last year arc 6-4
junior Cave Baum; 6-9
junior Terry Crocker; 6-4
sophomore Jon Gates; 6-1
senior Ronald Holmes; 6-0
sophomore Nicky Martin;
and 6-9 senior Jerry Tccl.
Paul Edwards transfers to
the Indians from Texas
Southern University this
year. The 6-1 sophomore
from Houston Lamar willbc
eligible to play in January
1977.
wardB spots. The other
freshman on the Bquad who
will probably see a lot of
playing time is Dennis
Bruington of Petersburg.
Cruse who has to stretch
to reach 5-11 on the scales
averaged 14.5 points a game
at Cooper last year playing
for former Indian great Marc
Case. He was named to the
District 5-AAAA AH-
District second team.
Mackey is an incredible
talent in his own right. The
6-4 youngster never partici-
pated in organized basket-
ball until his junior year in
high school. Last year as a
senior he was a first team
All-District 17-AAAA pick
as well as being selected the
"Prep Athlete of the Year" in
Houston. He averaged 17.1
points a game last year.
Bruington is an All-
District pcrormer as well as
"Player of the Year" in Dis-
trict 4-A. He averaged 18.0
points n game nnd hit 589fc of
his field goal attempts. The
lanky 6-3 newcomer also won
the Class A State doubles
title in 1975 and 1976 with-
out losing a set from the dis-
trict to state rounds in ten-
Three freshmen dot the n8j. . . t .
Indians' varsity roster and 4 The rest of the Indians
chances are that two of those tenm ths venr is mndc UP of
will be starters. Donnic Ray
Cruse from Abilene Cooper is
the starting point-guard at
this time in pro-season
workouts and Steve Mackey
from Houston Sterling is get-
ting the nod at one of the for-
five freshmen and one
sophomore. The freshmen
are Larry Beam from El Paso
Coronado Mike Godfrey
from Aspermont Danny
Hunter from Stinnett Jeff
McClure from Jim Ned and
Donnie Naylor from Waco
Midway. Orval Jackson a
sophomore from San Angelo
Lake View joins the Indians
basketball team after play-
ing a year of football with the
Indians.
Coach Kimbrcll believes
that the Indians' biggest
problem this year will be
having to play inexperienced
players. "Early in the season
experience means so much in
developing a young team. I
just hope our young players
have enough talent to over-
come their incxperienct of
college ball" said Kimbrell.
With the first game of the
1976-77 season just a week
off things look better than
last year but how much bet-
ter just can't be said. The
first opponent of the year
comes in the form of defend-
ing Lone Star Conference
champion Howard Payne
University Nov. 18. And
then completing the
weekend triple-header will
be two games with Sul Ross
State Nov. 19 and 20.
