Engineer's of Houston Lighting
and Power Co., noting substan-
tially increased use of electric
service by the company’s resi-
dential customers, have completed
a study comparing the two sum-
mers.
The- month . just past—July 1
through July 31—was 28.5 per cent
hotter than the same period last
year in terms of “degree days,”
which is the engineers' way of
measuring air conditioning re-
quirements. Light Co. engineers
point out that fortunately most
electric air conditioners are nor-
mally designed to meet varying
outside temperatures by cycling as
needed to maintain the same re-
frigeration.
The built-in reserve capacity of
electric motors and compressors
enables air conditioners to meet
the peak conditions of this sum-
mer’s searing heat. Since experi-
ence has shown the amount of
power used, by .an air .conditioner
shows a close correlation to the
number of .degree days, the same
air conditioner, will use 20 to 30
per cent more electric service this
and j summer than last.
Hotter days and nights mean
