The play of the hand fa an
orderly process which declarer
commences by sizing up his
chances as soon as dummy
comes down. Some hands more
or less play themselves and the
procedure is automatic, but
others require some serious
thinking before the proper line
of play is found.
For example, take this deal
where South is declarer at six
jpades. West leads the king of
diamonds and the first thing
‘ South does is count his losers.
He sees thers are none in
spades or hearts and that the
only tricks he can possibly lose
--------------'is certain, so the
outcome of the hand therefore
depends entirely on avoiding a
club loser.
Declarer realizes that If the
clubs are divided 3-2, he will in-
evitably make the contract, but
he also realizes that if they are
.divided 4-1 or 5-0, he may go
down. He therefore begins to
look for ways and mean* of
making the hand even if the
clubs are badly divided.
A little thought provides the
answer. He draws three rounds
of trumps, cashes the king sod
ace of hearts, and then ruffs a
heart. After cashing the acs of
clubs, be plsys a diamond from
his hand. He does not care
which opponent wins the trick
-he ltf a®'to make the slam.
LetVlook at the actual case
first. If East wins the diamond,
he is forced to return a heart
or a diamond, in which case
South get* a ruff and discard
and makes the hand. If West

the value of non-resident contracts
awarded dropped 31 per cent.
Non-residentta] electric current
consumption was up 17 per cent,
and non-residentia! gas consump-
tion up 10.
The number of electric current
customers climbed to 393,699 and
residential natural gas eustAners
up to 363,350.
The number of telephones In
service jumped to 618,109 and
there was a total of 228,320 water
meter customers.
New aut06 and trucks registered
climbed U per cent for the month,
rail tonnage was up nine per cent,
and port tonnage dropped 2-10 of
on* per cent. (Simulative tonnage
for the port this year has de-
creased two per cent as compared
with the first four months of last
wins the diamond, he must yield
a ruff and discard or else lead
a club. If he leads a club? South
simply plays low from dummy
and Is sure to make the rest of
the tricks.
The result would be the same
if East were the player with
the four clubs. The defenders
would run into the same dead
end, no matter which way they
turned.
It pays to plan the play.
