New art/literature course at LC
A new team-taught art and lit-
erature course will be offered
for the first time during the Lee
College fall semester, according
to Stephen Neihaus, LC art
instructor.
English 2354, 20th Century
Art and Literature, introduces
students to the different move-
ments and changes in modem
art and literature. Classes will
meet Monday, Wednesday and
Fridays, 10 a.m. to 12:05 p.m.
Both Neihaus and Dr. Marianne
Loyd, LC literature instructor,
will be teaching the coyrse.
Neihaus said the course will
specifically cover both U.S. and
European art. Students will deal
primarily with European art
created before 1945 and then fo-
cus on American art which as-
sumed dominance after 1945.
“People who may be bewildered
by 20th Century art and litera-
ture should enroll because it will
give them some illumination of
the puzzling art of the 20th Cen-
tury,” he added.
Loyd slaid the literature por-
tion of the course will begin by
contrasting 19th and 20th Cen-
tury material. One of the course
objectives is ‘To become ac-
quainted and familiar enough
(with the material) to be able to
write about it in essay form,”
she said.
Both European and American
writers will be studied. “What
makes this course different from
other literature courses is that
both 'European and American
writers and some of their experi-
mental techniques will be cov-
ered. Without in-depth study,
these innovative experimental
techniques are often confusing
to students. An attempt will be
made throughout the semester to
seek a correlation and connec-
tion between both the artists and
writers,” she explained.
The course will include other
peripherals. There will be field
Tax savings
emphasized
Individuals and business own-
ers alike can benefit from the
July 24 course, ‘Tax Savings for
Small Business and/or Individu-
als,” offered by the Lee College
Small Business Development
Center through the Continuing
Education Division. The event
will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. in
the Social Science Building,
room 218.
Fee is $15 for the three-hour
course, which will be led by Art
Layton with the assistance of
SBDC director Kenneth Voytek.
“We will examine expenditures
that qualify for tax benefits to
business owners as well as indi-
viduals,” said Voytek. “Issues
such as automobile and travel
expenses, use of the home as an
office, entertainment expenses
and equipment purchases will be
discussed.”
Voytek added that with state
and federal taxes on the in-
crease, an individual cannot do
enough to keep abreast of his or
her own tax situation. As expen-
ditures are made, one need to
know whether or not they are
tax-deductible, he continued.
To register, or for more infor-
mation, call the Continuing
Education/SBDC Office at
425-6311 or 425-6309.

School funding plan
fair, says official
AUSTIN (AP) — Texas’ new
school funding plan is fair, said
a state education expert, dis-
agreeing with poor school dis-
tricts that are challenging the
law in court.
“I feel it’s an equitable sys-
tem that meets the basic stan-
dards of fiscal neutrality,” said
Lynn Moak, deputy education
commissioner for research and
development, during a break
Thursday in a hearing on the
trips to various art museums in
Houston and a number of audio-
visual materials such as films
will be utilized, Loyd said. She
also said guest lecturers may
participate in the course.
The course, worth six semes-
ter hours, can be applied toward
both fine arts and sophomore lit-
erature credit. It is also transfer-
able to most colleges and uni-
versities through students should
check to be certain.

Loyd at 425-6434.
