HARRIS COUNTY
Three boating accidents were
reported along the San Jacinto
River on Wednesday, according
to the Harris County Sheriffs
Department.
In the early afternoon, Dwight
Ray Patterson had been boating
around 101 Grace Lane with his
4-year-old son and 10-year-old
daughter. He had been circling a
ski to retrieve it when a boat
drove over the rope, making it
taut and sending it over his boat,
Deputy Jerry Shirley of the Har-
ris County Sheriffs Department
Marine Division said.
“He was apparently trying to
keep the rope from hitting his
children and took the brunt of
the injuries,” Shirley said.
He sustained serious injuries
to his arm and hand while his
daughter sustained only a bruise.
The other boat fled the scene,
according to Shirley.
Patterson was admitted to San
Jacinto Methodist Hospital for
observation.
In another boating accident,
which occurred about 3:30 p.m
at 1100 Grace Lane, two boats
collided on the curve of the
channel just up from Banana
Bend. One of the boats sustained
minor damage and the second
boat fled the scene, Shirley said.
There were no injuries
repotted.
No information was available

Riots reported
after German :
soccer victory
LONDON (AP) — Soccer
hooligans threatened German ci-
tizens and overturned foreign-
registered cars after West Ger-
many defeated England in the
World Cup, and more than 500
people were arrested, police;
said.
Police said 35 officers were
injured in disturbances, which
broke out Wednesday night after
West Germany won 4-3 in Tu-
rin, Italy. Police said heavy
drinking by fans who watched
the match in pubs contributed to
the rowdiness.
One man was killed while in-
tervening in a disturbance in
Totton, in southern England, but
police were uncertain whether
the incident was related to soc-
cer frustrations.
In the seaside town of
Brighton, 50 miles south of the
capital, police locked 300 Ger-
man students in a nightclub to
protect them from hundreds of
angry English fans. The students
later were escorted safely from
the scene aboard five buses.

Cocaine found in gulf
GALVESTON (AP) — The Coast Guard is investigating about 60
pounds of cocaine in plastic-covered bricks found floating in the
Gulf of Mexico about 90 miles southeast of Galveston.
The cocaine was discovered about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday by an offs-
hore supply boat near the area known as the Flower Gardens, the
Coast Guard said in a news release Wednesday. The boat picked up
the one-kilogram bricks, which had an outer covering of burlap, and
notified authorities.
The bricks were covered with barnacles, indicating they had been
adrift for some time, said Petty Officer John Baiber.
The origin of the cocaine is not known, said a news release by the
Coast Guard. It was unloaded at the Coast Guard station at Freeport
and was transferred to the custody of U.S. Customs.

Dear Over:
I've said it before and
I'll say it again. There are
no quick ways to lose

Reduction of calories

As for diet pills: DON'T
