of Delta Kappa Gamma Society
International, an honorary edu-
cational society, attended the
61st annual Alpha State Texas
convention in Lubbock.
; Alpha State President Aleene
Van de Grift of Dallas presided
at the convention with over
1,200 members, representing the
299 Texas chapters and over
19,500 members. Theresa Fe-
check, executive coordinator at
international headquarters in
Aiistin, brought greetings from
D;elta Kappa Gamma
International.
Gamma Nu members attend-
ing were Barbara Culp, incom-
ing president, Kay -Hill, outgo-
ing president; Shirley Thiele, in-
coming first vice president;
Odein Gibbs, incoming second
vice president; Eleanor Carring-
ton, incoming treasurer, and Sue
Weir, immediate past president
and member of the state ceremo-
nials committee.
Epsilon Psi members attend-
ing were Charlotte Laughlin, in-
coming president; Pat Cauley,
outgoing president; Kathryn
Wright, chapter representative to
the Greater Houston Area Coor-
dinating Council; Gertrude
Mgrsh, immediate past president
and member of the Alpha State
Communications Committee;
and Jean Lee, chairman of Epsi-
lon Psi’s chapter rules and by
laws committee and Alpha State
chairman of the membership
committee.
Mrs. Laughlin and Mrs. Culp
participated in the training ses-
sions for incoming chapter pres-
idents on Thursday while other
members attended a leadership
management seminar. Friday,
Mrs. Lee led a membership
workshop, which was attended
by over 150 members. Mrs.
Marsh assisted with the commu-
nications workshop, attended by
over 100 members.
Both chapters were among the
Honor Chapters listed for their
scholarship contributions and
also received certificates for
their chapter newsletter
publications.
In addition to workshop ses-
sions, the members also at-
tended a birthday luncheon Fri-
day marking the 61st year of the
founding of the society in 1929.
Mrs. Lee was one of four mem-
bers who received the meritori-
ous Alpha State, Texas Achieve-
ment Award for outstanding
work at the state level as well as
the chapter level at the lunc-
heon. Representing the member-
ship committee, she also pre-
sented state honorary member-
ships to Hazel Bennett Goddard
of Marlin and Mary Hall of
Rockwall.
Mrs. Cauley and Miss Hill
were among the outgoing presi-
dents at the formal banquet Sa-
turday who were honored for
their work during the past bien-
nium. Mrs. Culp and Mrs.
Laughlin were among the in-
coming presidents who were
recognized at the banquet also.
Delta Kappa Gamma is the
largest group of women educa-
tors in the world. Its members
assist women members who are
striving to attain advanced de-
grees and promote their profes-
sional status and also award
world fellowship grants to
teachers in countries other than
the United States and Canada
who are not members of the soc-
iety. Those receiving these
worl^JwMfrships study in either
the UnuSr States or Canada.
There are 3,100 chapters with
over 178,000 members in the
United States and a dozen fore-
ign countries working for the
society’s goals.
Locally, Jane Goodner and
Kay Istre received Gamma Nu
scholarships and Debbie Denson
received the Epsilon Psi scholar-
ship. All three were awarded at
the recent Founders’ Day ban-
quet held at the Goose Creek
Country Club.
Delta Kappa Gamma Interna-
tional Epsilon Psi Chapter of
Baytown is celebrating its 30th
anniversary this year. The mem-
bership, established to unite wo-
men educators and to advance
their professional interests,^was
orgamzed Jan. 16, 1960, by 24
professional Baytown women.
