McMsrry College; Abilene Tz.
AAcM faculty gains new members
Ten new members have been
added to the McMurry College
faculty Dr. Thomas Kim Mc-
Murry president has announced.
In addition to these ten another
faculty member has been ap-
pointed who will begin his teaching
duties in January.
John W. Gibson has been
appointed assistant professor of
music and chairperson of the
music department. Chuddic J.
Jones a woodwind specialist has
been appointed assistant profes-
sor of music.
Frances G. Hermann and Ann
F. Llpric have both been appointed
assistant professors of business
administration.
Larry C. Shakclford and Vcrna
B. Wilson have been named
instructors in the physical educa-
tion department.
Other new additions include Dr.
Judith F. Minicr associate pro-
fessor of education; Dr. Richard
E. Schoficld assistant professor
of geology; Carolyn Sue Strohklrch
instructor in speech; and Ramona
K. Townscnd instructor in com-
puter science.
Dr. William F. Monroe will join
the faculty in January as an
assistant professor of English.
Gibson is in the process of
completing his DMA degree from
North Texas State and actually
began his work as chairperson of
the music department in August.
He holds a master's degree from
NTSU as well as bachelor's
degrees from Texas Tech and
West Texas State. He has pre-
viously taught at the University of
Arizona and in the Amarillo
Public Schools.
Jones joins the McMurry music

Freshmen
elect Rice
president
Teresa Rice of Graham was
elected president of McMurry
College's freshman class Tuesday
during a runoff election.
Rice defeated David Sorrclls of
Iraan in the elections which were
to choose a president and five
class senators to represent the
freshmen on the McMurry Stu-
dent Government (MSG).
Elected senators of the
freshman class one week earlier
were Jane Davenport of Uvalde
Conrad Hamnc of Rotan Kara
Jack of Albuquerque N.M. Sur-
fronia Rogers of Odessa and
Rhonda White of Coppell.
faculty as an assistant to band
director Tommy Fry. He holds
bachelor's and master's music
degrees from West Texas State
and is a candidate for a DMA
degree from the University of
Texas.
He has worked as a parttimc
teaching assistant of saxophone
at the University of Texas and
West Texas State. He directed
bands in Canyon and Odessa prior
to continuing his education.
Frances G. Hermann comes to
the McMurry business faculty
after teaching 21 years in the
Abilene Public Schools. A 1961
McMurry graduate she holds a
master's degree from Hardin-
Simmons. She had taught classes
at McMurry on a parttimc basis
for several years.
Ann F. Llpric another addition
to the business faculty recently
completed her MBA at Louisiana
Tech University. She earned her
bachelor's degree at McNccsc
State. She taught as a graduate
assistant in the Louisiana Tech
economics and business adminis-
tration departments.
D-. Minicr earned her Ed. D.
degree from the University of
North Dakota in 1979 and holds
bachelor's and master's degrees
from St. Cloud University in
Minnesota.
She comes from the University
of North Dakota where she was
an assistant professor with the
Teacher Corps program. She also
taught at St. Cloud State Univer-
sity as well as in several public
school systems.
Dr. Schoficld an addition to
McMurry's new geology depart-
ment completed work on his Ph.
D. in May at Rutgers University.
College costs increase by
NEW YORK NY (CPS)--Tlie total
cost of going to college-including
tuition room board supplies
transportation and personal expenses-has
jumped by as much as
13 percent for some students this
fall according to a survey by the
College Board's College Scholar-
ship Service.
The survey of some 3300
colleges predicts students at four-
year public campuses will spend
an average of $4338 to go to
school this year a 13 percent
Increase over last year's expenses.
Private college and university
students will spend an average of
$7475 to make it through the
1982-83 academic year an 11
percent hike over 1981-82 the
study found.
Soaring tuition rates are the
main reasons. Tuition is up an
average of 20 percent at public
colleges and 13 percent at private
colleges.
The average public college
tuition this year will be S979
compared tq $815 in 1981-82.
Private college tuition has hit
$4021 this year up from last
year's $3552.
Two-year colleges registered
similar increases. Public two-year
colleges are charging an average
of $600 in tuition up 18 percent
from a year ago. Private two-year
colleges averaged 11 percent
increases in tuition up to $2486
He also holds degrees from
Lafayette College and the Univer-
sity of Arizona.
He taught as a graduate
assistant at Rutgers and as a
parttimc instructor at Lafayette
College. He was a visiting instruc-
tor to Temple University in Phila-
delphia last year.
Shackelford who joins the
physical education faculty will
also be an assistant football and
track coach in the McMurry
athletic department. He holds a
bachelor's degree from Texas
Tech University.
Shackelford coached for ten
years in Olton serving as athletic
director his final three years
there. He left coaching but
returned as a football coach in the
Smylic Wilson ISD near Lubbock
last spring.
Vcrna Wilson another physical
education instructor takes over
the McMurry women's athletic
program. She will coach both the
volleyball and women's basketball
teams.
A former Abilene High School
coach Wilson holds a master's
degree from Northwest Missouri
State University.
Carolyn Strohklrch who holds
speech degrees from the Univer-
sity of Michigan and Central
Michigan University joins the
faculty as a speech instructor.
She has taught speech at El
Paso Community College and the
University of Texas at El Paso.
Ramona Townscnd an instructor
in the computer science depart-
ment has worked the last 10
years as a computer programmer
for the Burroughs Corporation
and the United States Air Force.

that room and board charges will
be up eight percent over last
year's averages while other costs-
transportation supplies personal
expenses-will rise by seven
percent.
Some officials argue students
are lucky the increases won't be
higher.

Broudcr attributes much of the
increases to the need to update
and remodel aging facilities to
the continuing effects of a decade
of unrelieved inflation and to
federal and state education budget
cuts.
