Gentry instructor to teach
this school year in Wales
By NANCY HEFNER HAWKS
1 .1 laine Morgan of Baytown,
p a history and geography
JLi teacher at Gentry Junior
School, truly enjoys the teaching
profession.
In fact, she enjoys her work
so inuch that she is willing to
forego her extreme fondness for
Mexican food for more than a
year and travel to Wales to
teach.
Mrs. Morgan applied for a
teaching position in another
country through the Fulbright
Teachers’ Exchange Program in
October of last year.
Funded by the United States
•government, this program en-
ables two teachers of different
countries who teach, the Same
grade level and subjects to actu-
ally exchange each other’s pro-
fessional lives.
Receiving notification last
December that she would be inr
terviewed among 500 other
applicants throughout the United
States, Mrs. Morgan was inter-
viewed by eight professors at
The University of Houston.
“Only eight teachers were
selected from Texas and four of

beaming.
Having taught in Baytown for
the last 11 years, and previously
teaching at Crosby High School,
Mrs. Morgan teaches sixth-
grade world history and world
geography, however, she will
teach English history in Wales.
Mary Judith Williams, an En-
glish history teacher for 20 years
at the Brian Gore Comprehen-
sive School in Wales, will arrive
in San Francisco Aug. 16 and at
last meet with her American
counterpart. Together they will
attend mi orientation until lime
to leave for their respective
“homes” for the upcoming
school year.
“Our families are so much
alike,” says Mrs. Morgan. “Ju-
dith has two boys about the
same age as my two girls. Her
home is about two and one-half
miles from the school. I think
my only real concern is learning
how to drive on the other side of
the road.”
While discussing their respec-
tive vehicles Mrs. Williams in-

However, Mpr. Williams on
the other hand remarks, “I have
a sister living in California, but
I’ve never been to Texas. I hear
it gets quite warm there, am I
right? I’ve bought a few ‘thin
things’ and have been wearing
them around for a while. My
friends ask what I’m up to and I
just tell them I’m practicing for
Texas.”
On her arrival in Wales, Mrs.
Morgan plans to take a few
sightseeing trips before the
school year begins. She plans to
see Morgan Castle while there.
I Because her husband’s fam-
ily, as well as her own, are from
England and Scotland, Mrs.
Morgan will no doubt have “a

formed Mrs. Morgan that her car
was most definitely not automa-
tic. As she told her, “My car is
not automatic. I have never dri-
ven an automatic car and I don’t
know whether I’ll ever be able
to handle one. Much less learn
to drive on the other side of the
road.”
In preparing for their jour-
neys, both ladies are a little
more than excited about their
upcoming adventure to another
country and have definite ideas
about how they’ll get by.
“I plan to take at least one
large container of picante sauce,
chili mix and even some chili
powder packed in my suitcase,”
says Mrs. Morgan. “And when
the subject of clothes came up, I
discovered they’re wearing wool
over there right now. It doesn’t
even get warm over there. If I
rollicking good time” exploring
the old castles.
Upon entering the country,
Mrs. Morgan must go immedi-
ately to the police station, show
her Texas driver’s license,
which will be good during her
stay; and pay 25 pounds.
“Welcome.”
Before her school year be-
gins, Mrs. Williams plans to
travel. She is quite interested in
visiting Mexico.
Mrs. Morgan has designed a
special jacket for her journey.
!She has specially-designed a
blue jean jacket with large blue-
bonnets scattered throughout. If
this jacket doesn’t give her away5
as a Texan “over yonder,” y’all
just wait until she opens her
mouth.
