New students to Barbers Hill
Middle School, grades six
through eight, must come by the
counselor’s office for registra-
tion and academic placement.
Sixth-graders will register at 9
a.m. Aug. 15, with placement
testing administered from 10
a.m. to noon.
Sixth-grade orientation will
be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 23.
New seventh- and eighth-
graders will register at 9:30 a.m.
Aug. 16 and have placement
testing from 10 a.m. to noon.
Intermediate school, for
grades three through five, will
register students Aug. 15-16.
Registration for primary
school, kindergarten through
second grade, will be held from
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 15-16, but
drop-ins will be welcome
throughout the month of August.
Navy Seaman Tony L. Tate,
son of Andrew and Helen Tate
of Baytown, is a participant in
the “West African Training
Cruise” while serving with
Commander South Atlantic
Force, Norfolk, Va.
The purpose of the training
cruise is to provide a Naval pre-
sence in the natiqns of the West
African Atlantic coast, promote
understanding, cooperation and
goodwill between foe U.S. and
foe nations of West Africa. Tate
visited several foreign countries
including Togo, Nigeria, Equa-
torial Guinea, Cameroon and
Sao Tome.
A 1981 graduate of Robert E.
Lee High School, he joined foe
Navy in July 1987.
Navy Seaman Recruit Clif-
ford M. Tatum, son of Sherry
and Clifford Tatum Jr. of-Day-
ton, has completed recruit train-
ing at Recruit Training Com-
mand, San Diego.
During Tatum’s eight-week
training cycle, he studied gen-
eral military subjects designed
to prepare him for further
academic and on-foe-job train-
ing in one of the Navy’s 85
basic fields.
His studies included seaman-
ship, close order drill, Naval his-
tory and first aid. Personnel who,
complete this course of instruc-
tion are eligible for three hours
of college credit in physical edu-
cation and hygiene.
A 1989 graduate of Dayton
High School, he joined foe Navy
in March 1990.
