LC graphic arts program r:
offers career opportunity
THE BAYTOWN SUN
Sunday, August 5, 1990
The Lee College graphic arts
program helps provide the print-
ing and publishing industry with
qualified personnel in offset
printing, layout and design,
camera and stripping, desktop
publishing and large scale press
operations, according to Lou
Linder, coordinator of the
program.
“Individuals taking courses in
graphic arts are finding an inter-
esting as well as a lucrative voc-
ation,” said Linder. “This indus-
try is projected to grow by 15
percent over the next 10 years,
and printing operations are lo-
cated in every part of the coun-
try and in every size community,
so a person skilled in the print-
ing industry will have no trouble
finding employment.” Those
skilled in graphic arts can antici-
pate high wages and employ-
ment stability, she added.
Because of Lee College’s
reputation for thorough, state-of-
the-art training in graphic arts,
private industries with small
print shops and commercial
printing plants call LC instruc-
tors as a source of supply for
well-trained personnel, Linder
said.
The college’s complete and
modem graphic arts laboratory
was developed with the needs of
students, business and industry
jn mind, Linder explained.
“These needs are established
through surveys and studies
made in cooperation with na-
tional, state and local educa-
tional agencies and Greater
Houston businesses and indus-
tries and through suggestions
and comments made by the ad-
visory committee, which is com-
prised oj' members of leading
firms in the graphic arts indus-
try,” she said.
Fundamental courses offered
this fall include GRAA 1401,
Offset Printing; GRAA 1403,
Layout and Design; GRAA
1405, Camera and Stripping;
GRAA 1430, Desktop Publish-
ing; and GRAA 24216, Large
Scale Press Operations. The
schedule for full-time students is
8 a.m.-1:10 p.m. Monday
through Thursday. This enables
the student to attend other clas-
ses in the afternoon or evening
as desired.
Afternoon and evening
graphic arts classes are also of-
fered for those unable to attend
full-time and for shift workers
who may need to adjust their
schedules occasionally. Those
who take fundamental courses
during the fall can follow up
with advanced courses in the
spring on the same days at the
same times, Linder added.
Students can work toward a
nine-month certificate in graphic
arts or a two-semester certificate
in desktop publishing. Credits
earned for certificates may be
applied toward an AAS degree
in graphic arts. Instructors in the
program are Linder, David
Bauerlein, Mary Gribble and
Mac Fowler.
Those who are interested hi
the program are encouraged to
pick up a permit to register at
the Admissions and Records Of-
fice, located in Moler Hall, and
take it to the graphic arts lab, lo-
