Lee College sets courses for fall
With the expansion in Lee
College science department
offerings this fall, students have
the chance to explore physics
without having an extensive
mathematics background.
Math prerequisites of tradi-
tional physics classes often limit
enrollment to engineering or
science majors, according to
Thomas O’Kuma, LC physics
instructor. Beginning this fall,
the college will offer a two
semester conceptual physics
course to those who want to take
physics but do not have a math
background.
These new cotfrses, General
Physics I and II, were developed
by O’Kuma, who has been
teaching physics and engineer-
ing courses for the past 14
years. He patterned the curricu-
lum after similar conceptual
physics courses Offered by other
colleges and universities in the
state.
Although the courses are
designed, primarily for liberal
arts, elementary education and
other non-science majors, the
fundamental concepts will be
the same as those studied in
college or engineering'physics.
Students will learn about such
ideas as motion, energy, light
and sound through lecture and
classroom participation, exper-
imentation, field trips and other
activities.
Physics is of particular inter-
est to students because it is the
basis for all disciplines of sci-
ence, laying the groundwork for
concepts that are studied in
biology, chemistry, geology and

percent of persons affected by gout have
relatives who have also had problems with
this painful condition. Excess uric acid, or

Bed rest, drinking at least 3 quarts of

drugs will usually take care of the gouty

environmental sciences, O’Ku-
ma says. Physics also explains
much of the naturally occurring
phenomena in daily life, offer-
ing reasons as to why the sky is
blue, why cats always land on
their feet, where stars come
from and more.
Studying physics helps stu-
dents to develop analytical
thinking important in the pursuit
of other fields of study and
eoreefs, O’Kuma says. Because
Texas mandates that elementary
teachers convey physics con-
cepts to pupils, the conceptual
physics courses enables
elementary education majors to
expand their own knowledge
and, in turn, pass it on to others.
Completion of the two-~
semester sequence of general
physics at Lee College will
fulfill the science requirements
for most non-science majors,
and the credits earned will trans-
fer to most other colleges and
universities in Texas. Classes
for General Physics I, PHYS

a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and
Fridays this fall.
