Clubs raise cash for McMurry
Preparations arc now underway
for the sixth annual McMurry
College Alumni Association
Phon-a-thon.
The event in which members
of the 12 social clubs on campus
call their alumni for contributions
to the college raised a total of
$31500 last year. That's an
increase of some 400 percent over
the $7720 that was raised in the
first year of the Phon-a-thon.
The social club raising the most
funds receives a prize of $300
while second and third place
winners take home $200 and $100
Programs planned for
Women's History Week
A full week activities to com-
memorate Women's History
Week arc planned at McMurry
College from Feb. 26-March 4.
The events will actually get
underway a few days earlier when
representatives of the college will
be on hand for the signing of the
Women's History Week procla-
mation Abilene mayor Elbert
Hall will sign the proclamation at
8:30 a.m. Feb. 23 In the Council
Chambers.
The activities at McMurry are
being coordinated by Dr. Fane
Downs chairperson of the His-
tory Department.
Events at the college will begin
with a juried art exhibit on
Sunday (Feb. 26). A reception at
which artists will be present is set
for 2-4 p.m. in the gallery of the
Ryan Fine Arts Center. The art
exhibit will remain up for public
viewing through March 9.
The exhibit wilt consist of
works entered by women artists
from Abilene and the surrounding
area. The works In the exhibit are
being judged by Maureen Ste-
wart chairperson of the Art
Department at Howard Payne
University in Brownwood. Cathe-
rine Benson art instructor at
McMurry is coordinating the
exhibit.
Black History celebration
Ra-Atum a McMurry College
service organization has planned
several events during the coming
week in observance of Black
History Month.
The organization is In its fourth
year on the McMurry campus and
has approximately 25 members. It
is designed for students Inte-
rested in cultural affairs and its
sponsor is Dr. David Collins
associate professor of education.
The activities began Wednes-
day with a speaker's forum. The
forum will Include several black
leaders from the Abilene commu-
nity who will participate in a
panel discussion and answer
questions. The list of speakers
will include business persons
politicians and educators.
On Thursday a film entitled
"Black History: Lost Stolen or
Strayed" was shown. Narrated by
Bill Cosby the film chronicled the
contributions of Black Americans
to the development of. today's
America.
A flash (from the past) dance is
scheduled for 9 p.m.-l a.m.
tonight in the United Methodist
Campus Center. The dance will
feature not only the latest dancing
tunes but also a musical antho-
logy of hit songs from black
artists of the past.
"Dark Symphony" a talent
respectively. Each club partici-
pating receives a bonus of $50.
This year's event is scheduled
for Feb. 26-28. The hours set
aside for the calling arc 2 p.m.-
6 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 26) and 6
p.m. -10 p.m. on Monday and
Tuesday (Feb. 27 and 28).

On Tuesday (Feb. 28) McMur-
ry will welcome Melissa Hleld
Deputy Assistant to the State
Treasurer of Texas as a guest
speaker.
Ms. Hleld a scholar in wo-
men's history will address
students faculty staff and the
general public at 9:30 a.m. in a
College Scries presentation in
Radford Auditorium. She will
conduct a special presentation for
McMurry faculty members at a
Brown Bag luncheon at noon the
same day in Room 106 of the
Campus Center.
Two events involving speakers
and the reading of prose and
poetry are scheduled for Wed-
nesday Feb. 29.
At noon three Abilene busi-
ness women will be on hand for
the Wider Opportunities for
Women program to be held In the
East Wing of the Iris Graham
Dining Hall. Addressing the pro-
gram which is open to the
general public will be Abilene
attorneys Janls Reinken and Jane
Varner and Claudlne Wooldridge
a vice-president at the Abilene
First National Bank.
A prose and poetry program
entitled "Voices of Women" Is
scheduled for 4 p.m. on the 29th
in the Presidential Dining Room
show and play will be presented
at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Recital
Hall. Immediately following the
show a taste of Black America will
be featured.

$500 or over).
A personalized marble paper
of the Campus Center. The
program will consist of readings
from the works of noteworthy
women of the past.
A reception honoring the wo-
men of McMurry who have
served the college over the years
and serving the college today is
set for Thursday (March 1) from
3:30 p.m.-5 p.m. in the Campus
Center.
During the reception the
"Unsung Hero Award" will be
presented to a women currently at
McMurry and "Trallblazer
Awards" will be presented to
honor women who have shaped
the history of the college.
Activities will conclude with a
women's concert to be held
Sunday (March 4) beginning at 3
p.m. in the Recital Hall of the
Ryan fine Arts Center.
The program to be coordinated

the Music Department at Abilene
Christian University will feature
works to bo performed by local
and area women composers and
musicians.
All of the events are open to the
general public and no admission
will be charged. The events are
being conducted with the support
of the college and the Abilene
Cultural Affairs Council.

have largest pledge classes
One hundred and twenty-two
McMurry men and women signed
on as pledges of six women's and
seven men's social clubs last
week.
Sixty-one men and 61 women
signed bids with Pi Delta Phi and
Alpha Sigma Chi coming away
with the largest pledge classes.
Delta Beta Epsllon was close
behind In the women's race with
16 pledges. Tlicta Chi Lambda
added 12 followed by Alpha Psl
Alpha with seven. T.I.P. picked
up six pledges while Gamma
Sigma had three.
In the men's clubs H.E.I and
Ko Sari each had 14 pledges while
XO added 10. 1.H.R. got commit-
ments from five new pledges.
Makona and KIVA had one new
pledge each.
