Oscar-Winning Director
Returning To Television
By BOB THOMAS
Aawcittad Fret* Writer
HOLLYWOOD (AF) - 0*
earwinning Delbert Mann, one
of the pioneering directors of
trio* toon drama, is returning to
trieriston after a conriderable
absence Why?
“Because 1 can find in trierl-
lion the artistic freedom that
isn't available in films right
now,'' replied the Kansas-born
director.
Mann, a tall, sandy-haired
man who directs In a quiet, per
suture manner, was one of a
galaxy of new directors who
came to films out of trier Won't
golden era of drama. His spring
' board was ‘'Marty," which he
directed for trier Won with Rod
Steiger as the lor eric It butcher.
Ernest Borg nine starred in
the low-budget film version,
which won Oscars far him, the
film (best picture of 1969-and
.Delbert Mann. “Bachelor Par
ty,” "Separate Tables," "Lover
Come Back” and ‘That Touch
of Mink” were among Mann's
other films.
A year and a half ago, produc-
er Fred Brogger came to Mann
with the proposal to film a new
rerrion of the children's classic
"Hridt” in Switzerland for
television special. ‘‘Hell, yet,
the director answered.
Mann agreed with Brogger
and his partner, actor James
Fmnctacut (“Mr. Novak”), to
direct “Hridle,” and NBC came
in on the deel. The show was
filmed last fall In the Swiss
Alps, at Lubeck, Germany, and
In studio Hamburg with Maxi-
milian Schell, Jean Simmons,
Michael Redgrave, Walter Sle-
zak and newcomer Jennifer Ed
wards In.the title role. It will
appear on NBC Sunday evening.
“One reason I did ‘Hridl’ was
because of the challenge of
bringing R up to date and shoot
ing it on a reasonable budget
800,000) in the actual locale*,”
said Mann. “But the biggest
lure was the artistic freedom
which it afforded. After we
agreed on the budget and the
start; there was no creation
control exhibited by NBC or the
sponsor. We just wfnt away and
shot it You can't ask for more
freedom than that.”

Q. I have received notice
from my draft board to report
for a preinduction physical. It
started me thinking about a
number of things, including so-
cial security.
I have been employed for
sometime and make fairly good
wages. Since I understand that
army pay is considerably less
than my present earnings, I
wondered if this will have a
direct bearing on the bene-
fits to which I or my survivors
might be entitled. If so, it
seems that some provision
should be made to offset what
I consider an inequity in. the
law.
j§Has any consideration been
given to correcting this situa-
tion? I do not even “know If
military pay to servicemen Is
covered by social security.
A. It brings back some mem-
ories as to the time I stood in
your shoes and served in World
War II. At that time our mili-
tary pay was not covered by
social security. However, for
the benefit of the other old
tlmere, our Congress ind Pres-
ident aw flt to give sll WW11
Veterans with good discharges
a gratuitous credit for social
security purposes of $160
monthly for each month. Then
we come right on up the line to
the veteran of the Korean War.
For his service, spent during
the Korean War period, he re-
ceived this ame $160 monthly
credit. _

They passed a law which in-

This granted him the same
uninterrupted protection afford-
ed the average employe. This
went Into effect Jan. 1, 1957,

items as the value of food,
