Do you need winter grazing
for your livestock? “Plant a
winter cover crop o f grain
legume” says Melvin Haner of
Realitos. Winter cover crops ser-
ve two purposes, they provde
winter feed for livestock and, if
grazed properly, improve the
condition of the soil”, Haner ad-
ed.
Soil improvement is accom-
plished by protecting the soil
with cover crops or crop resi-
due. This is essential when crops
are not £ej,pg grown. Besides
surface soil protection, cover
crops add needed organic matter
tc the soil. Organic matter im-
proves soil tilth providing a bet-
ter environment for plant grow-
th. 'V
In the Agua Poquita Soil and
Water Conservation District it is
good to plant a cover crop on
land that has been planted to a
soil depleting crop and is to be
retested next year. This restores
the physical condition of the soil,
and moisture can be used since
the land will not be in a crop
the following year.
The crop may also be grazed
with good management, so as to
leave at least 3000 pounds of re-
sidue per acre for soil improve-
ment.
When moisture is plentiful in
the soil at the time of planting.
Haner recommends fertilization
of the cover crop.
The time to plant a winter
cover crop is from September
15th through November 39th.
For more information on win-
ter cover crops, and seeding
rates, contact the Soil Conserva-
tion Service office, assisting the
Agua Poquita Soil and Water
District at Benavides.
The Agriculture Stabilization
and Conservation Service office
in San Diego provides cost -
sharing on seeding, seed and fer-
tilizer for oats, hubam clover,
Dixie winterpeas, austrain win-
terpeas, rye and barley. Infor-
mation on cost-sharing is avail-
able at the ASCS office in San
Diego.
