With the recent rains we have

Odem Women in
Wreck Thursday
In Corpus Christi
Mrs. Yates Bosworth and Miss
Julie Horn were slightly injured
in a car wreck which occured
on Padre Island Drive in Cor-
pus Crristi Thursday. Mrs. Bos-
worth sustained a neck injury
and Miss Horn’s arm was in-
jured. Two other passengers in
the car escapedr injury.
Miss Horn was driving and
she applied the brakes as she
approached a red light, the brak-
es failed to operate and in an
attempt to avoid striking a car
which was'passing in front of her
at the intersection she turned in-
to a ditch beside the street. The
car turned completely over land-
ing with the wheels in the air.
The car was badly damaged.
grass you want to plant, your
land must be properly prepared
well enough so that you could
plant grain or cotton.
After having a good seedbed
prepared, you need to decide on
which grass to plant. Two popu-
ular grasses in the area are
coastal bermudgrass and buffel-
grass. but we have a new grass
that is also being planted by
many, called Kleingrass. Any
of these grasses are good. Each
has some limitations and each
has some outstanding charac.
teristics. An ideal situation
would call for a landowner to
have each of these grasses in
order to have a well balanced
grazing system. Each of these
grasses should be planted and
fenced separatly with a water-
ing facility provided in each pas-
ture. As many landowners have
found out in the past, livestock
will graze one grass at certain
times of the year before they
graze another kind of grass. This
twill result in overusing one
grass and probably underusing
another grass.
The most important factor in
whether you have a good or
poor pasture is management.
Just because you have a good
stand of desireable grass, you
can not stop there. Some man-
agement factors are discussed in
the previous paragraph. Others
include: proper grazing of the
grass by not overgrazing, fertili-
zing the grass to increase pro-
tein content and increse forage
production, brush and weed con-
trol by either chemical and or
mechancial methods to elimin-
ate weed competition for mois-
ture and nutrients, and having
some type of drought plan in
mind as to what you are going
to do in a time of drought.
