district and 35 cent main-
tenance tax for such a district

lighest county-wide elections
ever held.
A total of 2,235 votes cast
represented only 12.8 per cent
of the county’s voting

Odem, Edroy, Sinton and
Gregory approved the creation
of the drainage district and the
maintenance tax.
The voters in Odem ap-

45 vote; Edroy carried by a 36
to 10 vote. Sinton went 754 for
and 102 against and Gregory
voted 75 to 13. The two-issue

San Pat Names
Probation Head
The appointment of Alonzo
Rodriguez by District Judge
John H. Miller as adult
probation officer for San
Patricio County was approved
by the commissioners court
Monday morning. Rodriguez
will assume his duties as of
Nov. 1, 1971.
The appointment of an adult
probation officer was made
possible through 'a $21,996
grant which came through the
Criminal Justice Council which
oversees statewide law en-
forcement planning and ad-
ministers funds for the U. S.
Department of Justice. The
grant is one of three criminal
justice actions grants totaling
$99,862 recently approved for
the area by the Coastal
Regional Planning Com-
mission.
The money coming to San
Patricio County is for financing
its first adult probation
department. Heretofore, the
persons convicted on felony
charges and placed on
probation made their reports to
members of the sheriff’s
department.
There were more than 100
adults on probation for felonies
living in the country for whom
there was no means of
supervision.
Rodriguez will work with
Judge Miller on ,a full-time
basis at a salary of $12,000 per
year, with the Texas Criminal
Justice Council grant bearing
$9,000 of that salary and the
remaining $3,000 will be
provided under the fees which
will be charged those on
probation for supervisory care
by the probation officer. The
fees for such supervision can
be as much as $10 per month
per adult on probation in the
county. The expense to the
county will be rendered in “in-
kind” service including office
space, the district judge’s
services etc.
The total amount of the
annual cost of the program will
be $29,582 with the
or county’s, share to be $7,586.
The salary for a secretary at
the rate of $465 was set up in
the 1972 budget, said Ray
Harris, county auditor. The
three-year program will start
as of Nov. 1, 1971 and
Rodriguez will have a tem-
porary office until repairs have
been completed on the Fern
damages done to the basement
in the courthouse, where the
probation officer will have a
permanent office set up.
Rodriguez is a college
graduate. He formerly taught
school in Taft and was em-
ployed as the executive
director of the San Patricio
Youth Opportunity and
Education Program in San
Patricio County, having
followed Jack Jones in that
office. He was promoted and
went to the State Program
Office in Corpus Christi, to
later become associated with
the City of Corpus Christi as
Man Power Planner for that
city.
