cently completed an enlistment
in military service, has accepted
a job at the Celanese plant at
Clarkwood.
Kim Janicke had knee surgery
in a Corpus Christi hospital Mon-
day and is reported to be in sa-
tisfactory condition. He was
here on vacation from Universi-
ty of Texas.
Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Cornett
visited relatives in Papalote

Whitleys Have
Family Gathering
Mr. and Mrs. William Whitley
had a Christmas dinner for her
relatives and it was the first
time for the three sisters and
one brother to get together in 37
years. Those here were her sis-
ters and their husbands, Mr.
and Mrs. Ted Peeks of San An-
tonio and Mr. and Mrs. E. S.
Powers of Port Arthur and a
brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs.
Mack Elliott of Tulia, Miss Jan-
el Peeks and Wayne Peeks of
San Antonio.
Father Dies
Issac Wilson Thomas, 73, fa-
ther of Howard Thomas of Odem
died in his home in Mountain
Home. He was a member of the
Church of Christ, a Mason and
the former county judge.
In addition to his son in Od-
em, Mr. Thomas is survived by
his widow, three daughters,
three other sons, four brothers,
nine grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
Families Helped
By Charity
Group Here
Ninety-six families in Odem
and Edroy were given grocer-
ies by the Colonias Unidas un-
der the self-help relief program.
The groceries, consisting of
flour, beans, potatoes, tomato
sauce, coffee, sugar, grits and
shortening, wer delivered to the
homes of these families by se-
veral persons who volunteered
their services in doing so. The
families served ran from one to
14 persons.
The Colonias Unidas is a non-
profit organization established
in various counties to help care
for the needs of families which
are not covered by other organ-
izations, or families who failed
to qualify for help under the oth-
er programs.
San Patricio and Bee Counties
established Colonias Unidas for
the two counties. Officers in the
Odem and Edroy chapter are
Mrs. Maria Garcia, president;
Mrs. Virginio Garza, vice presi-
dent; Mrs Ninfa Rivera, secre-
tary; Martin Gonzales, reporter;
and Tony Benavides, treasurer.
The Odem-Edroy group plans
to continue helping as many of
the needy persons in the two
communities as can possibly be
done throughout the year. The
elderly people will come in for
first consideration.
The ladies from the organiza-
tion distributed 344 bags of can-
dy, cookies, fruit to as many
children from Odem and Edroy
at a party in the city park Wed-
nesday afternoon of last week.
The ladies sold tamales and
solicited funds or gifts of food
and candy to make possible the
party for the children. Several
individuals, merchants and the
Ladies Auxiliary of the GI Fo-
rum were among those making
cash donations or food and toy
contributions.
To Fort Worth
Mr. and Mrs. 0. A. Ehlers
were in Ft. Worth during the
holidays and while there attend-
ed the christening of their three-
month old twin grandchildren,
Cynthia and Robert Ehlers, on
Dec. 27 at St. Matthews Memor-
ial Church. The children are the
daughter and son of Mr. and
Mrs. John W. Ehlers. The ma-
ternal grandparents, Dr. and
Mrs. N. L. George of Oklahoma
City, attended the christening
also.
Moises Perez
Dies Wednesday
In San Antonio
Moises Perez Sr., 66, died
Wednesday at the heme of his
sister in San Antonio.
Perez had lived in Odem since
1926. He was a retired barber
and a member of the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in Odem.
Funeral services will be at 10
a.m. Friday in the Sacred Heart
Catholic Church with burial in
San Pedro Cemetery.
Among survivors are one step-
daughter, Mrs. Cruz Escamilla,
one daughter, Miss Josie Wells,
and one son, Moises Perez, Jr.,
all of Corpus Christi; three oth-
er sons, Richard Wells, of Tam-
al, Calif.; Francisco and Anto-
nio Perez of Odem; two sisters,
Mrs Jose Dominguez and Mrs.
Lee Mena of San Antonio; three
brothers, Juan Beltran of Odem,
Antonio and Jesus Perez of San
Antonio; and 24 grandchildren.
To Workshop
Among the school men who at-
tended the Administrators Ad-
visory Conference to be held in
Austin Jan. 6-8 will be C. L.
West, David Kern, Wilbert Trey-
big and John Bremer, the admin-
istrative staff of the Odem
school system.
The new president of the 121,158-
member Texas Farm Bureau is
a successful North Texas “dirt”
farmer and beef cattle producer.
He is J. T. Woodson of Gober ip
Fannin County. Woodson was
elected president by TFB dele-
gates at the organization’s con-
vention in November in Fort
Worth. He succeeded Sidney I
Dean of Victoria who had serv-
ed for three years.

Gets Burned Hand j;jjjj
Warren Nix, two-year old son
of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Nix, re:
ceived second degree burns on
his left hand Christmas Day
when he reached out and touch-
ed a hot exhaust pipe on amo-.
torycycle parked in the yard.
He was taken to a Sinton hospi-
tal for first aid treatment and
was released shortly afterward.
The child’s cousin, nine-month
DeeDee Mann, was taken to the
same hospital for treatment
Christmas morning suffering
from an ear infection.
