- Vosses Home From European
. Tour Including East Germany
Dr. and Mrs. A. H. Voss have
returned from a tour of several
countries on the European
Continent, including an ex-
citing and uneasy trip into East
Berlin.
East Berlin is a land without
smiles, say the Vosses. The
abject apathy of the residents
is matched by the dreariness of
the country itself. Mrs. Voss
says that remains of bombed
buildings with their rubble are
just now showing signs that
rebuilding is started in many of
the towns. “I found my deepest
heartbreak in Leipzig, East
Germany, where the name of
the world-famed University
has been changed to Marx
University”, said Mrs. Voss.
Perhaps the thing that jarred
the Doctor most in their trip
into East Germany was that
satisfied air that the inspectors
had in reading and re-reading
and studying and re-studying
the American passports
. handed the inspectors for their
inspection. “Somehow one gets
the idea the Russians are
taking a kind of delight in
showing the Americans the
Russians are in power for once,
said the Doctor. Then he smiled
and said that a Russian woman
colonel was in charge of
passport inspection. From his
tone one got the impression
that the woman colonel was
plenty tough.
The Doctor and his wife
spent four and one-half hours
getting into East Germany and
another hour and a half getting
•out. They are glad they made
the trip into the East German
sector, but they have no desire
to ever return there.
Dr. and Mrs. Voss traveled
with a group, making the tour
by chartered bus over much of
the 2,000 miles tour of the
Continent. The group floew
from London to Rotterdam,
Holland, where they took the
bus for the remainder of the
tour of the Continent. They
visited England, German,
(East and West), Holland,
Austria, Switzerland, and
Italy. The Vosses both liked
Switzerland, Austria and West
Germany best. They were
surprised to see so many Negro
students on the campus at
Marx University and so many
hippies in Amsterdam,
Holland, which seems to be a
haven for the hippies. The
visits to famous churches and
other historical points of in-
terest were throughly enjoyed
by the Vosses and they were
well impressed by the beauty
of the countryside in all of the
countries visitied, with Swit-
zerland, Austria and West
Germany ranking highest in
natural beautv of all the
countries visitedTthey said.
When asked if the money-
crisis caused them any trouble,
the doctor replied, “Only the
deflated feeling one gets when
he realized that the fistfull of
Italian money he is holding has
not made him a millionaire and
that ail the money he holds in
his hand is worth just the same
amount as the American
dollars exchanged for the
foreign dough.” The language
barrier was almost nil,
because the Europeans are so
linguistic, said Mrs. Voss. They
ran into the most language
difficulty , with the waiters in
Rome, who knew little English
and could care less that they
did, Mrs. Voss said.
Upon their return-^to the
State^Dr.. and Mrs. Voss
stopped in Tennessee to visit
their relatives, including their
younger daughter, Miss Donna
Voss, who is doing graduate
work at the University of
Tennessee at Knoxville.
The Doctor returned from
there to his duties in his office
here, and he said this was the
first time in his adult years
that he had had a month-long
vacation away from work. He
enjoyed the experience of
traveling as Mr. Voss, a retired
pharmacist, rather than Dr.
Voss as he has heretofore
always traveled. He, in reality,
is a retired pharmacist since
he received his degree in that
branch before he entered upon
his studies for a medical doctor
degree. He retired as a
pharmacist the day he
received his doctor of medicine
degree and launched his career
as a physican and surgeon.
Before coming home from
Tennessee, Mrs. Voss visited
her mother, Mrs. Mae Gibson
in Jonesville, Va., her
hsuband’s relatives in Nash-
ville, her sister in Dyersberg,
Tenn., and her daughter, Miss
Voss, in Knoxville, who drove
her to visit some of the other
relatives in western Ten-
nessee.
