Airman First Class Norman
B. Hennigan, son of Mr. and
Mrs. O. N. Hennigan of Rt. 1,
Odem, Tex., is on duty at Da
Nang AB, Vietnam.
Airman Hennigan is an air
freight specialist with a unit of
the Pacific Air Forces,
headquarters for air
operations in Southeast Asia,
the Far East and the Pacific
area. He previously served at
Bergstrom AFB, Tex.
The airman is a 1969
graduate of Calallen High
School, Corpus Christi, Tex.
L. Branson To Serve
As Instructor At
Band Camps In July
Larry Branson, assistant
band director in the Odem
Public Schools will be among
the instructors at the Texas
Lutheran College band campus
to be held in July.
He is one of the 20 area band
directors named to the staff.
He will be directing principally
percussions.

application for funds to rebuild
classrooms and a classroom-
shop building has been ap-
proved by the Office of Health,
Education and Welfare, and
the funds will be available as
soon as blueprints,
specifications and other details
are approved.
The sum approved for the
OISD is in the amount of
$263,057 and was granted under
Public Law 815.
The monev win he used to
rebuild the 10-classroom junior
high school which was heavily
damaged by Hurricane Celia,
and for three classrooms in a
shop building to be erected.
There will be no delay in the
specifications being drawn for
the buildings said West.
However, the plans must first
be approved in Austin and then
sent to Washington D. C. for
final approval. Lynn A. Evans
of Corpus Christi, who has been
employed as engineer for the
school, told West that it may be
as long as 18 months before the
work can be completed.
Five laminated buildings
were purchased by the school
soon after the hurricane to be
used as temporary
classrooms until permanent
buildings could be replaced.
The replacing of the junior
high school building has been
the major project for the Odem
Independent School District
since Celia heavily damaged
the school plant.

Hired by Trustees
In its regular meeting
Monday night the Odem school
board signed the contract for
an assistant football coach and
hired a school counselor.
Michael C. Rheinlaender had
been hired in an earlier
meeting as assistant football
coach. He comes to the Odem
school system from Ingleside.
Prior to his having coached in
the Ingleside school he had
served as a junior high school
coach in Runge. He also served
as head scout for the Runge
high school.
He is a graduate of New
Braunfels and holds a degree
from SWSTU in San Marcos.
He was associated with the
Runge schools at the same
time James Rose, now head
football coach in the Odem high
school, was coaching in Runge
High School.
Roy Hranicky of Sinton was
employed as school counselor.
He is currently associated with
the Texas Rehabilitation
Commission in the Corpus
Christi area. He has served as
counselor with the commission
since 1966. He has also taught
in the Premont High School
and in the elementary schools
in Banquete and Smiley. He
was principal in two of those
schools and taught history,
government and English in the
Premont High School. He is
well-known in Odem. His wife
is a classroom teacher in this
school, and he was the builder
of the Odem postoffice.
Both Rheinlaender and
Hranicky are members of the
Methodist Church. Mr. and
Mrs. Rheinlaender have one
child.
Alana Troth Goes
To State UIL Meet
Alana Troth, senior student
at Odem High School, returned
to Odem Saturday with her
sponsor Mrs. Allene Briscoe
after representing Odem High
well at the state level in Ready
Writing. Even though Alana
did not place in the State Meet
in Austin, she is certamly
highly recognized for her
accomplishment of getting this
far.

Mrs. Elmer Burton
Buried in Sinton
Wed., May 12
Funeral services for Mrs.
Elmer Burton, 66, were held at
the Goodwin Funeral Home
Chapel in Sinton at 4 p.m.
Wednesday, with the Rev. Leo
Ross officiating.
Mrs. Patsy Burton sang “In
the Garden” as a special
number with Mrs. R. D. Smith
at the organ.
Burial was made in the
Sinton Cemetery under the
direction of Goodwin Funeral
Home.
Mrs. Burton had died
unexpectedly at 9:25 a.m.
Monday in a Corpus Christi
hospital following a long
illness.
Martha Lou Rushin Burton
was a native of Rosebud, and
she had lived in the Odem area
for a number of years. She was
a member of the Baptist
Church.
Survivors include her
husband, Elmer Burton of
Odem; four sons, Robert
Burton of Jackson, Miss., Billy
Joe Burton of Ft. Bliss, Elmer
F. Burton of Falfurrias and
Johnny Burton of La Puentes,
Calif.,; four daughters, Mrs.
Doris Vickers of Odem, Mrs.
Jimmy Rushing of Houston,
Mrs. Herman Schuling Jr., of
Des Moines, Iowa and Mrs.
David Ehase of La Puente,
Calif.; two brothers, Frank and
J. L. Rushin, both of Pittsburg,
Calif., and 19 grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Crawford
Whetstone, Jack Whetstone,
Howard Thomas, Wayman
Tewes, Charlie Curtiss and
Louise Tewes, all of Odem.
Next Tuesday, May 18, will
be election time in San Patricio
County with four amendments
to the state constitution to be
voted on. In addition to the four
amendments several areas in
the county will vote on liquor-
by-the-drink.
Only those areas in which it
is legal to sell beer and hard
liquor will be eligible to vote on
the mixed drinks proposition.
This will be in Old San Patricio,
Sinton, Gregory, Ingleside and
Aransas Pass.
The election will be held
between the hours of 7 a.m. and
7 p.m. Voting judges and
polling places will be found in
another story in the paper.

Miss Jan Greenwood
Receives Degree From
Sam Houston State
Miss Jan Greenwood
received a Bachelor of Arts
degree in the field of teaching
in the Commencement
Exercises at Sam Houston
State University held at 7:30
p.m. Sunday in Pritchett Field
stadium.
Miss Greenwood attended
Ranger Junior College and
after graduating there she
completed her college
education at Sam Houston
State University. She received
honors at both schools. She is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Jesse Greenwood of Odem and
a graduate of Odem High
School.
Mrs. Greenwood, Roger
Greenwood, Mr. and Mrs. W.
R. Drum of Odem, Mr. and
Mrs. James Mayo and son of
Houston and Mrs. Bramlett
and daughter. Miss Donna
Bramlett of Dallas were some
the out-of-towners attending
the commencement exercises.
Mrs. Greenwood and son and
Mr. and Mrs. Drum drove to
Huntsville Sunday morning
and returned Monday ac-
companied by Miss Green-
wood.
Eighteen-year-olds will not
be permitted to vote in this
election.

System, will address 302
candidates for graduation from
Blinn College.
The sole candidate for
graduation from Odem is
Charles Fredrick Spieker-
mann.
The Commencement
Exercise will be held May 16 at
8:30 p.m. on the Spencer
Athletic Field.

Odem before the Odem
Kiwanis Club several weeks
ago.
Mrs. Carpenter explained
the importance of the work and
its far-reaching goals. She
emphasized the fact that
mental regardation, one of the
phases of mental health, has at
last been recognized as such
and the former stigma which
so many had attached to
mental retardation has been
removed. This she considers
one of the greatest forward
steps in the program.
The Rev. Mr. Carr, too,
spoke on the importance of the
mental health program and
urged the Kiwanians to assist
in the work in Odem and Ed-
roy. The Rev. Leo Ross volun-
teered to serve as temporary
chairman until a permanent
chairman could be found. Mrs.
Mrs. Sembrano has accepted
the Dermanent chairmanship.
