First Round Of State Playoffs

The Bulldogs missed a
chance to be the undisputed
district champion, losing in the
regular season finale, but they
rebounded with a 28-14 win
over Port Isabel in the Division
II bi-district contest. The Bulldog
defense came up with three
turnovers, while Cason
Shoemaker paced the offense
with 74 yards rushing and two
touchdowns on 21 carries. Quarterback Chris Pilarczyk ran for a
score and passed 0 yards to Josh Klatt for another.
Mathis lost a 25-19 decision to Raymondville, as the Bearkats
turned two fourth-quarter breaks into touchdowns. The Pirates
lost quarterback Chase Sugarek to a knee injury in the third quar-
ter, but Eric Byerley came off the bench to complete four of six
passes for 32 yards and two touchdowns.
DISTRICT 32-3A CHAMP La Feria clipped Bishop, 10-6,
holding the high-powered Badger offense to 170 yards. Badger
quarterback Cody McCarty completed only four of 29 passes,
with two interceptions and a 51-yard touchdown.
Sinton sloshed to a 21-13 win over LaVernia in Seguin. With
Craig Jones out and quarterback Rick Dyer ailing, Robert Hughes
was the Pirates' workhorse, getting 243 yards and two TDs on 30
carries. Hughes scored on runs of 45 and 33 yards, as the Pirates
totaled 343 yards on the ground. LaVernia was held to 72 yards
rushing and 195 total yards.
ARANSAS PASS KNOCKED OFF George West, 29-15, with
three Panthers rushing for more than 100 yards. The Longhorns
led 15-14 early in the second quarter, but a 52-yard run by Josh
Bedre and a 47-yard pass from Chad Smithey to John Taylor put
the Panthers on top.
West Oso skunked Goliad, 35-0, with the
Fillmore brothers each rushing for 100 yards or
more. The Bears totaled 400 yards on the ground,
led by D'Andre Fillmore with 162 and three TDs and
Steven Fillmore with 100 yards.
THIS WEEK, SINTON faces Raymondville in the
Division I regional game, Friday at Buc Stadium in
Corpus Christi.
In Division II area contests, West Oso battles
Orange Grove, Friday at Javelina Stadium in
Kingsville and Aransas Pass takes on La Feria,
Friday at Tuloso-Midway. All three games are sched-
uled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
IN THE COASTAL BEND...Corpus Christi
Carroll knocked off undefeated San Antonio
Southwest, 16-14 in 5A Division I. The Tigers will
now face undefeated and tradition-laden Converse
Judson.
In 5A Division II, Victoria downed San Antonio
East Central, 27-21 and meet San Antonio Madison,
this week. Corpus Christi Moody lost a 27-20 deci-
sion to South San Antonio.
ALICE SHUT OUT Los Fresnos, 32-0, in 4A
Division I. The Coyotes host San Antonio Lanier, this
week. In Division II, Calallen got by PSJA, 17-14,
and drew undefeated Schertz Clerrfcns in the area
round. Rockport-Fulton got bumped from the run-
ning by Edcouch-Elsa, 20-7.
Kenedy surprised Freer, 12-7, in the 2A Division
I bi-district battle. The Lions meet Blanco, this week.
In Division II action, Refugio blanked La Villa, 39-0,
and Banquete defeated Three Rivers, 21-7. This
week, the Bobcats take on Poth, while the Bulldogs
face Geronimo Navarro.
. AROUND THE STATE... Industrial's 7-6 win
over four-time 3A state champ Sealy heads the
list of headline-grabbers in the first week of the
playoffs.
Two other defending state champs also lost.
Texas City lost to Bay City in 4A Division I, while
last year's Class A champion, Granger, was
unseated by unbeaten Iola, 22-14. In addition,
two preseason No. 1 picks lost in the opening
round, Sealy and Killeen Ellison in 5A Division I,
who fell to Duncanville, 21-14.
Nail-biters of the week...Three overtimes were
needed before Springlake-Earth defeated
Petersburg, 26-20, in a Class A bi-district contest.
Ditto for Irving Nimitz and The Colony in 5A
Division II. Nimitz won, 45-42.
