San Patricio Rattlesnake Races
Provided Variety Of Entertainment
THURSDAY, MARCH 20,1986
PAGE 7
w
Two days of games and festivities
were enjoyed by hundreds last
weekend at the Old San Patricio 14th
Annual World Championship Rat-
tlesnake Races.
Music was provided by the Bob
Clawson Band for dancing in the
grass, a barbecue was served by the
St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and of
urse, there were snakes, snakes,
akes.
A big highlight was a parachute
jumping demonstration by the Sky’s
the Limit Parachute Club from
Beeville, with the jumpers landing
in the arena, as promised.
Also on hand was the “Texas
Toy,” a monster truck that crushed
cars and provided rides on the big
machine.
The main event was the snake rac-
ing, though, and contestants came
from far and wide to participate.
Spectators were also a varied lot,
with visitors from New York,
Canada, Norway, New Hampshire,
Massachussetts, California and
other states coming to see “these
crazy Texans race snakes.”
Winning the top award was Denise
Sigmand of Orange Grove, who rac-
ed a snake named “Droopy
Drawers” to beat out a field of 100
contestants.
Second place went to Doyle Curtis
of Corpus Christi with his entry,
“Calamity Jane.”
The winners of ten individual
heats participated in the final heat
for the championship.
A special trophy went to Phil
“Breezy” Sokolov, Channel 10
weatherman as a Media Award.
There were also other champions
in events like the Human Wheelbar-
row Races. Lonnie Glasscock IV and
Randy Sikes both of San Patricio
won the Saturday wheeelbarrow
races and won wheelbarrows
donated by Western Auto of Three
Rivers and Whites Auto on Leopard
St. in Annaville.
The men’s boot race was won
Saturday by David Craig of Houston,
who received $145. The Saturday
women’s boot race winner was
Loretta Gamboa of Ingleside, who
received $165.
The Sunday winners of the human
wheelbarrow race were James
Harvey and Lorenzo Diaz of Corpus
Christi. They took home wheelbar-
rows donated by Western Auto and
City Lumber Co. of Mathis.
The men’s boot race on Sunday
was won by G.L. Catheirna of
Kingsville, pocketing $100 for his ef-
forts.
Cindy Flores of Corpus Christi
took the $110 prize for the Sunday
women’s boot race.
Other games for children and
adults included egg catching, egg
and spoon races, spiderman races,
sack hops, three and four legged
races and more.
Snake handling demonstrations
were presented by professionals and
there was plenty of food and drink to
go around.
A carnival provided rides and
amusements for the children.
Lonnie Glasscock, President of the
San Patricio Restoration Society
said that funds raised will go toward
the establishment of a permanent
museum and a historical restoration
of Old San Patricio, which was
founded in 1830.
