HEB Senior Citizen Day
Seniors Hoola-Hoop,
Win Prizes Thursday
A fun time was had by all at the
H.E.B. Senior Citizen Day last
Thursday.
Approximately 275 seniors, from
as far away as Michigan and
Massachusetts, joined in the game-
playing and prize-winning activities
at the store.
“This is one activity to show our
senior customers that we appreciate
them doing business with us,” Assis-
tant Store Director Fred Moron said
Monday.
Moron said the activity was coor-
dinated in conjunction with the
American Association of Retired
Persons (AARP).
The fun-loving group participated
in Hide-And-Seek, Name That Tune,
Name That Fruit, Trivia and even
did a little hoola-hooping.
Store Director David Ashworth
said the idea for the senior get-
together came from similar ac-
tivities done by store directors in
San Antonio and Austin.
Appliances, coupons and gift cer-
tificates were given to the seniors as
door prizes. Mathis door prize win-
ners were Mrs. Tommie DeAtley,
John Oltmanns, Mrs. Helen
Winegard, Karen Moulton, Irene
Dilts, Don Stone, Beulah Kole, Ray-

Frances E. Bridges
Mrs. Frances E. Bridges, 83, of
Kingsville, died Thursday, Jan. 22 in
a Kingsville hospital.
She was a member of the First
Baptist Church of Kingsville. She
was a retired public schoolteacher
having taught in the Mathis, Sinton,
and Augusta, Arkansas school
systems.
Survivors include her husband,
Clarence Odelf (Red) Bridges of
Kingsville; two stepsons, Reginald
Bridges of Lubbock, Texas, and Dr.
D.R. Bridges of Victoria; a step-
daughter, Neldene Metucevich of
Victoria; a brother, John S. Easton
of Beeville, Texas; a sister, Lillie
Woack of Kerrville, Texas; 12
grandchildren; and seven great-
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Satur-
day at the Tucotte Mortuary Chapel
with Rev. Dan Wooldridge of-
ficiating. Graveside services were
held Saturday at the Sinton
Cemetery in Sinton.

Ernesto Gonzales Sr., 76, passed
away Wednesday at his residence in
Mathis after a sudden illness.
He was a retired farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Maria Gonzales of Mathis; four
daughters, Mrs. Juanita Terrazas of
Springfield, Missouri, Mrs. Irma
Cavazos of Abilene, Mrs. Enriqueta
Arcos and Mrs. Lupe Gutierrez, both
of San Antonio; one son, Ernesto
Gonzales Jr. of San Antonio; five,
sisters, Mrs. Dora Ramirez of Alice,
Mrs. Emma Cerda of San Antonio,
Mrs. Paz Leal of Corpus Christi,
Mrs. Juanita Gonzales and Mrs.
Manuela Gonzales, both of Mathis;-
three brothers, Francisco Gonzales
of Mathis, Jesus Gonzales of
Beeville and Bonifacio Gonzales of
Corpus Christi; 18 grandchildren
and 12 great-grandchildren.
A Rosary was recited Friday at
the Dobie Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Mass was celebrated Satur-
day at the Sacred Heart Catholic
Church. Interment followed in
Cenizo Hill Cemetery.

sudden illness Jan. 16 in Kirbyville.

Mrs. Thekla
Steinmeyer Noe
Mrs. Thekla Steinmeyer Noe, 86,
of Tynan, passed away Saturday
evening in a Corpus Christi hospital
after a short illness.
She was born on May 24, 1900 in
Karnes County, Texas. She had lived
in Tynan, Texas for many years,
then moved and lived in Austin for a
number of years. She had lived in
Skidmore since 1976.
Survivors include numerous
nieces and nephews of the
Steinmeyer family.
Funeral services were conducted
Monday at St. Paul’s Lutheran
Church in Tynan, Texas. Interment
followed at the Waldheim Cemetery
in Tynan.
Pallbearers were Dennis Carlson,
Clarence * Carl and Bobbie
Steinmeyer, Allen Hanus, and David
Ross.

Dean's List
Seven San Patricio County
residents were among the 1,505
students whose 1986 Fall semester
grades earned them places on the
Dean’s List Southwest Texas State
University, San Marcos.
They included: David L. Nelson of
Sinton; Glen C. Havelka and
Michael S. Wilson, both of Taft; Jara
L. Hailey of Mathis; Kenneth L.
Shaw of Portland; Dawn E.
McAskill of Ingleside; and Brenda
A. Shirley of Aransas Pass.
To qualify for the academic
honors listing, an undergraduate
student must have earned a grade
point average of at least 3.5 during
the semester while taking at least 12
semester hours of course work.

To Attend
Hesston
Gilberto Perez Jr., the son of
Gilberto and Elizabeth Perez of
Mathis, has applied and been ac-
cepted by Hesston College for the
1987-88 academic year.
Perez is presently a senior at
Mathis High School.
Hesston College, located in
Hesston, Kansas, is a two-year col-
lege affiliated with the Mennonite
Church. The college places a dual
emphasis on liberal arts and career
training and offers the Associate of
Arts degree in nine major areas.
Hesston College has an enrollment
of 450 students representing 30 states
and 12 foreign countries.
