the 110-meter highs and the 300-
meter intermediate hurdles, with
Rene Herrera sixth in the 3,200-

ly points came from Randy Sikes’
fifth place finish in the discus.
The Pirate 400-meter relay team
of Ollie Moreno, Sean Orsak, Tamez
and R. Lopez placed third, while
Moreno, R. Lopez, Asiano Davila

Curt Oliver Completes
Cage Season At Tarkio
Curt Oliver, a 1985 graduate of
Mathis High School, has just com-
pleted his sophomore basketball
season at Tarkio College in Tarkio,
Mo.
Oliver, a 6-2 forward, averaged 9.0
points and 6.3 rebounds per game for
the Owls junior varsity team that
finished with a 9-6 record.
Commenting on Oliver, head
coach Chip Parsley said, “Curt gave
our junior varsity team the leader-
ship it needed. He played some
especially strong games near the
end of the season, leading the team
in scoring in three of the last four
games.”

Pirates Down 'Homs, 5-4
With Sixth Inning Score
West Oso Wins Tourney
Pirate JV Loses To Ingleside
In Wild Battle For Consolation
West Oso held off a late Aransas
Pass rally to take a 10-9 win in the
championship finals of the Mathis
JV Baseball Tournament, last
weekend at Pirate Field.
The Bears took a 10-1 lead into the
fifth inning, only to have the Pan-
thers put eight tallies on the board in
their comeback effort.
Taft took a 9-2 win over Sinton in
the third place contest, and the In-
gleside JV defeated Mathis, 17-14, in
a wild bout for the consolation title.
The Pirates opened the tourney
with a 7-6 first-round loss to Taft, as
the Hounds scored twice in the top of
the fifth inning to take the win.
The Pirates got on the board in the
first, on runs by Michael Gutierrez
and Israel Morales and an RBI
single by Frank Gonzales.
Taft took a momentary 3-2 lead
with a trio of runs in the top of the
third, but the Pirates matched that
output in their half of the inning with
runs by Gutierrez, Richard Aguilar
and Morales.
Taft tied the score at 5-5 with two
runs in the top of the fourth, Gutier-
rez’ solo homer in the bottom of the
inning gave the Pirates a 6-5 edge.
The Hounds used a double,
sacrifice, error and base clearing
triple to effect their fifth inning rally
and advance to the semifinals.
The Pirates buried Odem, 16-3, in
the consolation semifinals, as they
scored nine runs in the first inning.
Gonzales went three for three at
the plate, including a pair of doubles
and a triple, and scored three runs
for the Pirates. Juan Trejo had three
hits in four at bats, Aguilar had
three hits in five plate appearances,
and Edward Boerm blasted a solo
home run.
In the consolation finals, Ingleside
scored 13 runs in the fifth inning, the
last six after two outs had been
registered, to overcome a 14-4 Pirate
lead.
The Pirates broke a 1-1 first inning
tie with four runs in the second
frame and added seven more in the
third to take what appeared to be a
commanding 12-4 lead.
Leading only 5-4 going into their
half of the third, the Pirates used
singles by Morales, Aguilar, Trejo,
Gonzales and a double by Jesse
Figueroa to put seven runs on the
board. The Pirates put together a
two-out rally for six of those runs,
and also benefited from a pair of
base on balls and a Mustang fielding
error.
The Mustangs used nine base hits
and five walks in their comeback ef-
fort that saw 19 Ingleside batters

come to the plate.
Morales was a perfect three for
three at the plate, including two
doubles, to lead the Pirate batsmen,
while Figueroa had three hits in four
at bats.
In first-round tournament action,
Aransas Pass defeated Odem, 17-9,
West Oso whitewashed Corpus
Christi Academy, 15-0, and Sinton
shutout Ingleside, 9-0.
Aransas Pass took a 5-3 win over
Taft and West Oso was a 4-3 winner
over Sinton in the championship
semifinals.
In the consolation bracket, Mathis
beat Odem, 16-3, and Ingleside took
a 10-3 victory over CCA in the
semifinals.
In their last outing before spring
break, and District 29-3A competi-
tion, the Pirates scored in the bot-
tom of the sixth inning to defeat Heb-
bronville, 5-4, Friday evening at
Pirate Field.
Mathis jumped to an early 4-0 lead
in the first inning, only to have the
Longhorns come back with four rims
in the fifth frame to tie the game.
The first four batters reached
base, and eventually scored, as the
Pirates opened the game with a
wicked offensive.
Michael Perez led off with a
single, followed by Robert Leija’s
walk. Ruben Neito singled to score
Perez, Eli Herrera followed with an
RBI single that scored Leija.
Adrian Pena’s double brought
Nieto home and Bobby Gonzales
singled to score Herrera, all before
the first out had been registered.
Pirate hurler Nieto kept the Horns
off the scoreboard for the first four
innings, registering eight of his 11
strikeouts in the first four frames.
The Horns put together a base hit
and a pair of walks before a double
brought in their first runs. Two more
singles, from consecutive hitters,
accounted for the remainder of the
Hebbronville scoring.
In the bottom of the sixth, Edward
Hernandez scored the game winning
run on a two-out single by Perez.
Gonzales and Perez led the Pirate
hitters with two hits and one RBI
apiece, while Nieto, Pena and Her-
rera also had runs batted in.
Following spring break, the
Pirates will open their District 29-3A
schedule Friday, Apr. 8, hosting
Kenedy at 7 p.m.

Good reports coming in this past
week, with black bass, white bass,
crappie and catfish all biting.
Tom Robinson of Mathis came in
with ap 8 lb. 2 oz. black bass. Like so
many others caught lately, this
large mouth was landed on a black
worm with a chautruse tail in three
to four feet of water.
Curtis Cook from Corpus Christi
brought in a nice stringer of black
bass, ranging in size from 4 lbs. to
5% lbs. Curtis found the
black/chautruse combination dead-

trailer and caught a real nice 4 lb.
