President renovations

The yellow walls that were
the trademark of President
residence hall are no more.
After many nights of paint
parties pizza eating and late
bedtimes the lobby of this
dorm has received a new
paint job furniture and ac-
cents. "The first few nights we
would get started late in the
evening then take a break.
Around midnight one night
we all got a second wind and
finally said we wouldn't quit
until all the yellow was
gone'said Beverly Ferguson
women's residence hall di-
rector. " I hated to think that
the older girls especially
would be returning to the
same drab lobby" she said
During the two weeks prior
to the beginning of classes
student volunteers climbed
on ladders taped borders
helped choose furniture
scrubbed carpets and glued
wallpaper. Those students
who shouldered most of the
responsibility for getting the
whole renovation process
underway were mostly sum-

Leadership for the fresh-
man class was decided as
McMurry Student Govern-
ment conducted freshman
elections on Sept. 3.

Once freshman and orienta-
tion leaders arrived another
crew began and the basic
renovations were completed.
The yellow paint that had
covered the walls for years
has been replaced with a blue
and burgundy coat.
"This was a great way to
get everyone together" said

yellow paint but this was fun
and a good way to help the
freshmen bond with the
uppperclassmen in our build-
ing." Not only did the women of
President get into their deco-
rating but they were joined
by residents of both Hunt and
Martin men's residence halls.
Sophomore Robert Beeks
worked with the mainte-
nance department to obtain
paint brushes and basically
lead the way for the renova-
tions to begin. Several of the
male R. A.s also helped initia-
tors Jenny Wishowski Jessica
Thompson Starla
Westmoreland and Amanda
Update on the state of elections
Mike Murphy quit instead of
accepting lesser campaign
roles.
Meanwhile first lady
Hillary Rodham Clinton ap-
peared in Austin at the
University of Texas to speak
at a fundraiser for the
Women's Leadership Forum
an arm of. the Democratic
National Committee.
The first lady challenged
the mostly female crowd es-
timated at 800 to get out and
vote. She also made a point

Harvey Oaxhaca and Jon
Rhiddelhover was held on

weeks of training.
The opinion of residents
who had lived in President
before was summed up in
one word by a three year resi-
dent when she said'Finally!"
Head resident assistant
Westmoreland expressed
that all the students who
helped and Ferguson were to
be commended for all the
hours and evenings they had
sacrificed to improve the ap-
pearance of the lobby.
Along with the new paint
job Gold Star and President
residence halls gained new
sectional couches valances
and wall decorations. Presi-
dent has more of a living
room decor now with the
addition of a spider lamp
rug and rocking chair. In
addition two wing-back
chairs and a loveseat are also
on the way.

our campus finally has a
lobby its residents can show
off and be proud of"said an-

the other 54 million eligable
women voters to do the same.
Clinton later spoke to
about 2000 university stu-
dents concerning education
and important local issues
such as hunting and guns.
TheDemocratic National
Committee reported more
than $250000 was raised at
Thursday's event. Former
governor Ann Richards and
Texas iconLady Bird John son
were also on hand.
Thurs. Sept. 5. with
Rhiddelhover emerging the
victor.
The new freshmen Senate
joined the upperclassmen
and executive council at the
MSG retreat on Saturday.
