McM Students' plays performed at state drama
meeting after Ray Bernsen win top TETA prizes
McMurry first to
By Jasmine Mayficld
Brandon Ray and James
Bernsen have accomplished
a feat in the playwrighting
industry that many play-
wrights only dream of.
Bernsen and Ray were
chosen in their first efforts
to have their plays presented
at the January 1999 conven-
tion of the Texas Educa-
tional Theater Association in
Austin.
Individually they wrote
the plays and sent them in
for evaluation hoping to be
one of the two plays chosen
to be presented at the TETA
meeting. For the first time
in history the top two plays
were chosen from the same
school.
Bernsen was notified
about the success of his play
on a December afternoon
and he told all of his friends.
Later that same day Ray was
notified by Peter Dias that
his play had made one of the
top two slots as well.
"I started jumping around
I was so excited" Bernsen
said.
McMurry professors and
students involved in the The-
ater Department were in-
volved in the production of
win both awards
the plays.
"Virtually everybody in
the Theater Department is
involved in some capacity"
said Charles Hukill the stu-
dents' professor.
Bernsen's play entitled
"Victor" was produced on
January 22 at 4:30 p.m. in
the Austin Renaissance Ho-
tel. Ray's play "Just One of
Those Things" was pro-
duced at 10:30 a.m. Satur-
day January 23 at the same
location.
"Victor" is a futuristic play
that challenges the question
of euthanasia becoming a
government policy. "Just
One of Those Things" is a
romantic comedy set in New
England.
The cast of "Victor" in-
cluded: Shane Hill Denise
Waldrip Pierce LoPachin
and Robert Beeks. It is di-
rected by Dr. Philip Craik.
The cast of "Just One of
Those Things" included:
Marc McWhorter Doug
Jeter Denise Cox Johnny
Reyes and Dehna Mikuls.
The plays written by Ray
and Bernsen had opposite
content and style but they
featured "sparkling dia-
logue" that is hard to attain
according to Hukill.
