Where are they now?
Katelyn Coll
by Donna Hitt
Our Alumni spot-
light for this edition fea-
tures Katelyn Coll a May
1997 graduate of
McMurry University.
Katelyn graduated with a
Bachelor of Arts in Com-
munication. Katelyn was born
on March 9 1975 in Albu-
querque New Mexico but
moved to Hobbs New
Mexico when she was
seven years old. She lived
in Hobbs throughout her
school years and gradu-
ated from Hobbs High
School. Her main focus
during her high school
years was in sports where
she participated in track
volleyball basketball and
swimming. She also
worked as a teller in a lo-
cal bank.
Katelyn enjoyed
her college years at
McMurry University and
was active in several cam-
pus organizations. She
was very active in
McMurry Student Govern-
ment (MSG). Her fresh-
man year she was a Sena-
tor her sophomore year
she was class President
and Secretary her junior
year she was a Vice Presi-
dent and her senior year
she was President. Other
activities included being a
preceptor in Servant Lead-
ership involvement with
McMurry Student Activity
(MSA) Women's Social
Club and T.I.P.
What are some of
her best memories of
McMurry? Dorm life of
course. Katelyn chose to
live on campus through-
out her entire college
years so there are many
moments to remember.
You could almost mark
the season changes with
the activities of life in
Presidents Hall - sunbath
ing on the deck tossing
water balloons down on
unsuspecting passers-by
or throwing snowballs off
the roof. (The doors to the
roof are now locked!)
There was also the night
of the Saran-wrapped toi-
lets and the "borrowing"
of a very minor inexpen-
sive replaceable object
Katelyn Coll
from a well known
McMurry landmark.
(That incident got her and
her friends a few hours of
campus community service-
but no harm was
done!)
Katelyn's sister Jori
is a Junior at McMurry
University and her par-
ents Lawrence and Kathy
still live in Hobbs New
Mexico.
Katelyn's degree
choice served her well
and she accepted a job at
the Abilene Reporter News
immediately following her
graduation. She started
work in the Graphic De-
sign Department and was
promoted to Advertising
Media Consultant less
than two years later.
Among other duties her
assignment included spe-
cial advertising promo-
tions featuring "beautiful
downtown Abilene." She
did her job well and re-
ceived two Exsellor
Awards in 1999. This is a
recognition award for top
selling performance.
Katelyn will be
leaving Abilene at the end
of this month. She has
accepted a position at a
hospital in Champaign Il-
linois as a Communication
Marketing Coordinator.
We congratulate Katelyn
on her successful career
and wish her the best in
her new endeavor.

Nursing program granted
new accreditation
The Texas State
Board of Nurse Examiners
has recently granted the
Abilene Intercollegiate
School of Nursing (AISN)
full accreditation with
commendations. The
AISN has a 92.1 percent
pass rate for the NCLEX-
RN the state licensing
exam for registered
nurses. The May graduat-
ing class has a 94 percent
pass rate. Both pass rates
are well above the state
average of 86.8 percent
and the national average
of 84.7 percent. The pass
rate for the Family Nurse
Practitioner Program is
100 percent.
The Commission
on Collegiate Nursing Edu-
cation (CCNE) has granted
five years of national ac-
creditations for both the
undergraduate and gradu
Student's screenplay
to be produced
by Gin a Versyp
On February 19th
a student directed film will
begin its production here
at McMurry. The film Re-
member When will be di-
rected by Jeff Roberts a
theatre major who also
wrote the screenplay for
the film. Roberts' script
has been reviewed by the
dean and he has full per-
mission to go ahead with
the production. Unfortu-
nately the film will not be
produced in its entirety
due to time constraints.
Instead a six to seven
minute trailer will be con-
structed from the scenes
filmed and entered in a
film contest in San Angelo.
Roberts also has a chance
to enter the trailer in a
contest run out of Los An-
geles. The cast includes
Gerald Sandoval Denise
Cox Gina Versyp Jeremy
Gentry and Hope Cowan.
The crew consists of Gary
ate programs. An addi-
tional five years will be
granted if the follow-up
report in December 2001
is satisfactory.
Dr. Cecilia Tiller
Dean credits the excep-
tional work of the faculty
and students for making
this possible.
The AISN reports
that nurses are in great
demand today and that
there is currently a na-
tional shortage. Some
predictions estimate that
by the year 2005 there
will riot be enough nurses
to meet the worldwide de-
mand. Abilene Intercolle-
giate School of Nursing is
a consortium of Abilene
Christian Hardin-
Simmons and McMurry
Universities.
Wimberly Liz Mays Mar-
garet Harlan Brady
Nichols and Donley
Bixler.
Hopefully the
trailer will be completed
by the end of spring
break. It will then be
viewed by the cast along
with bloopers from the
production. Ultimately
Mr. Roberts hopes to
present the trailer to the
entire campus.
The film is a story
about a young man who
is devastated by the loss
of his true love and moves
to McMurry to get away
from his past. His parents
have also been killed and
so the double loss is
crushing. At McMurry he
meets another girl and
begins to fall in love but
is afraid to follow his
heart because of his past.
The film teaches the im-
portant lesson of remem-
bering the past but mov-
ing on to fully experience
the future.
