The planned screwworm erad-
ication program In the South-
west moved a step forward
with the announcement that
the Southwest Animal Health
Research Foundation’s board of
trustees Is being expanded arid
that an advisory council has
been created.
C. G. Scruggs, recently elect-
ed president of the Foundation,
said that each county which
has an organised committee will
be represented by one man on
the advisory council, and that
additional advisory council
members can be appointed.
Scruggs pointed out that 216
counties In Texas now have or-
ganised committees and that
other counties In the state are
in the process of organising.
"Interest In the program also
is growing In other states," he
said. “Seven parishes In Louisi-
ana have organised."
The Oklahoma Cattleman's
Association passed a resolution
at their annual meeting In De-
cember calling attention to the
screwworm eradication program
being activated In the South-
west and resolved to "Join with

complete screwworm eradica-
tion.”
Scruggs said the selection of
Harry Jersig of San Antonio as
a trustee brings the total num-
ber of trustees to 16 at this time.
Jersig will represent Wildlife
and Sportsmen's clubs.
In their latest, meeting the
trustees emphasized — through
the following statements—that
every penny collected would be
used solely to bring about a
screwworm eradication pro-
gram “That it be the policy of
the board of trustees that all
funds received from producers
shall and will be held In escrow
to be expended only in the
event funds are available or au-
thorized to initiate the screw-
worm eradication program and
In the event that efforts to
secure sufficient funds fail, all
monies In such escrow ac-
counts shall be returned to the
Individual or organization from
which they were received."
The screwworm eradication
program is literally one of self
extermination. It is based pn
the fact that the female fly
mates only once. The native
population is overwhelmed by
systematic release of screw-
worm flies which have been
sterilized by Irradiation.
The foundation reports that
as of January 10, 210 Texas
counties had met, organized
and begun collecting funds. By
January 15, at least 225 to 235
counties were expected to be
underway. A count of 42 coun-
ties, Informally received, show-
ed an average of nearly $7,500
per county with none complete.
L B. Burnham, Mills County
chairman, announced Tuesday
that contributions In Mills
County to date are approxi-
mate $3,000.
