As rumored and
confirmed b) Mark Odom
Director ot Securit). a
sexual assault occurred on
campus on Januar) M).
2002 A report was filed
with McMurr) Securit) and
with the Abilene Police De-
partment investigations are
still pending and though
McMurr) is not activel)
pursuing this investigation
the) are assisting in ever)
vva) possible in the police
investigation I he
assailant's identity is. as tar
as Mark Odom is aware un-
known I his is the second
on-campiis sexual assault
that has occurred in the past
ten years while Odom has
been the head of securit)
In light ol this. I
decided it was important to
w rite a piece informing men
and women what preventa-
tive measure one should
take in order to protect
themselves from being
sexuall) assaulted or being
wrongfull) accused ol
sexual assault B) no means
am I sa)ing that in not tak-
ing precautions that sexual
assault is condoned I sim-
pl) want to ensure that the
students on campus aie full)
aware that even though
Abilene is a small and. for
the most part a sale comniu-
mt). things like sexual as-
sault still happen and we
need to be aw are ol that and
how we can protect our-
selves Last) ear (2001 ) according
made us competent as min-
isters of a new covenant

The letter kills
You know things might be
a lot less messy if Christ
himsell. in the flesh was
regularly sitting in on our
meetings church services
rev ivals prayer groups etc
We'd be a lot less likely to
think or say anything about
our "good" ideas our ' well
organized and helpful ' pro-
grams how much we "sac-
rifice" or any other notion
of our commendability
We'd be ashamed to think
we're even close to perlect
enough to exhibit the perfect
wisdom and goodness of
God Hut since we don't
have a chair from which
Christ leans back sips His
Mountain Dew and offers
suggestions we tend to tor-'
get his presence as well as
his influence The tendency
is to forget
Granted we hu-
mans are pretty forgetful as
it is We take things for
granted and get pretty com-
fortable Can you imagine
to statistics by the Crime
Victim Crisis Center
(CVCC). a total ol 225
sexual assault cases were
reported lor Abilene and the
surrounding areas Ol that
225. 75 ol the victims were
under the age ol seventeen
Ol the 225 only "0 were re-
ported to law enlorcement
agencies Only two convic-
tions as known to the
CVCC. were made
According lo Jud)
Kinger). the Director ol
CVCC. the number of
sexual assaults involving
college students is ex-
tremely large I he major-
it) ol victims are females
aged lourteen to twenty
three years Usu.ill). 88 to
90tf ol the tune sexual as-
sailants are known lo the
victim in eases where the
victim is under the age ol
2 In cases where the ic-
1 1 in is over the age ot
(went) -three only 509f of
the time is the assailant
know n
There are man)
situations in which we can
take preventative measures
against sexual assault this
is not to say that when tak-
ing such measures sexual
assault cannot occur As
listed in the CVCC booklet
measures that one can take
while at home are to never
allow anyone whom you do
not know into )our home
verily identifications con-
cerning workmen and re-
pairmen keep windows and
but the
il you had to remember to
breathe to make yourself
take in and expel air ' How
about remembering to make
your heart beat every sec-
ond ' Now how would we
get anything else done that
way ' Maybe God needs to
take the air out for a few sec-
onds every couple ol min-
utes to remind us who's
holding it all together much
less who's the one guiding
us and enabling us to be use-
lul I know I tend to
seem very harsh and nega-
tive towards my Christian
brothers and sisters but I
also know that if you read
this there is criticism in the
pursuit of communal excel-
lence I hope we can all see
that I'm not trying to bring
down both the secular and
church establishment I'm
seeking excellence I be-
lieve excellence is what will
make things better in our
world Half the time (or
more il you ask my wife
who may be right) I don't
know what I'm saying
dreaming or thinking But
acting like I'm the one with
the plan leaves a mess
When we lose our humility
doors locked at all times use
initials in the public direc-
tory light the entrance to
your home have your keys
ready to enter your house
and il someone asks to use
your phone otter to make
the call tor the person
While in a vehicle it is sug-
gested that one keep the
doors locked to stay on ma-
jor highwaysroads park in
well-lit areas have keys
ready to unlock the car and
do not use deserted rest ar
eas along the highways
During the night one should
avoid walking in vacant ar

' It was easier than I
thought it would be I
didn't have anything to
base it on so I assumed it
would be difficult Now
it's getting harder as I take
more upper level classes"

' The education part ot col-
lege is easier than I thought
it would be Interacting
even il things are coming
together eventually things
get sloppy and people get
scattered jaded segmented
or loyalties are divided I
know there is a lot more to
Raise your right hand and repeat: "I do solemnly
swear to always be politically correct . . .
eas near shrubs or in dimly
lit places
One should always
be aware ol his or her sur-
roundings1 One ol the big-
gest threats that we have to
lace as college student' is
sexual assault in a dating
situation The biggest piece
ol advice I can give is to
make sure you know as
much as possible about a
person before you go out a
date with him or her and
even then do not go out vv ith
a stranger unless you are
with a group ol people If
you choose not to do this at
with other people on cam-
pus is haider though"

'College was easier than I
thought at fust but now that
be said about all ol this I
feel like all 1 ever do is get
half started and move on to
something else in my next
column. Well I'm too
scared to ev en dream up an
least let someone know of
your plans and meet at a
public place Also be aw are
ot drugs that may be slipped
into your drinks
Tor you guys out
there to avoid miscommu-
nication. where you think
she wants to but she really
doesn't il she doesn't ex-
plicitly say ' YHS to sexual
activity then keep your
hands oil' And remember
those same pieces ol adv ice
mentioned belore apply to
