Ice Cream
Supper Honors
Couple
Bruce Fox and his fiancee
Miss Nell Volkert of Sinton,
were honored with an ice
cream supper and pantry
shower in the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Tom Harper Tuesday
evening at Robstown.
Gifts included kitchen
gadgets and good, and guests
were relatives of the honorees.
Those attending were Miss
Volkert and Bruce Fox,
honorees and Mr. and Mrs. J.
E. Fox Jr., Mr. and Mrs. J. E.
Fox Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Volkert,
Bill Volkert, Mr. and Mrs. Joe
McNair, Mr. and Mrs. Dick
LeBleu, Mr. and Mrs. Lenox
West, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Fox,
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Harmon
and children, Mr. and Mrs.
Corky Crane and children, Mr.
and Mrs. Kenneth Hefty and
children, Mr. and Mrs. Glen
West and children, Weldon
West, Judge and Mrs. Horace
Young, Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey
Harper and children, Mr. and
Mrs. Chad Fox, Mr. and Mrs.
Bill Carper, and the hosts Mr.
and Mrs. Tom Harper.
Mr. and Mrs. Royce Reed
were pleasantly surprised
when they returned from
College Station July 11 to find
their four-year old Hereford
cow had given birth to twin
heifer calves, possibly the day
before, to make the third calf
born to the cow in less than a
year. She had dropped a bull
calf in August 1973.
When the Reeds’ grand-
daughters, Cheryl and Sandra
Scarberry, arrived during the
weekend to visit their grand-
parents, the little girls were
intrigued by the baby calves.
When they found the calves had
not been named it took no time
at all for the names Sandra and
Cheryl to be given to the twin
calves. And the little girls fell
right in with the idea and also
they asked for, and were
granted, permission to “hold
the bottles” for the baby calves
while the calves get their
supplementary feeding at
morning and night.
Twin calves down on the
Reed farm are not actually a
novelty, since another cow
gave birth to twin bulls in 1971.
They, too, receive sup-
plemental feeding. And on
Several other occasions the
Reeds have found it necessary
to give supplemental feeding to
baby calves. So bottle-feeding
calves may be a new ex-
perience for the grand-daugh-
ters but, Mr. and Mrs.
Reed have had much ex-
perience in that line of caring
for cattle.
The cow with the record of
having given birth to Jhree
calves within less than a year
carries a dual monicker --
“Poppy” and “The Big Red
Heifer”. The names are usea
interchangeably. But the baby
twins will each keep her own
name given by the Reeds’
granddaughters, said Mrs.
Reed.
