Undefeated 8th Graders Win Again 34-0
t >
In great contrast to their
opening game with Woodsboro,
when they were able to score
only one touchdown and hold on
for a 6-0 over the Eaglets, the
Owlets really get their offense
moving as they scored a big 34-
0 win over Banquete’s
Bullpups. The Owlets scored 12
points in the first quarter, 6 in
the second and 8 in the third
and fourth quarters for the 34
point total. The Owlet defen-
sive unit never allowed the
Bullpups to make a serious
threat.
Scoring touchdowns for the
Owlets were David Garza who
took a 28 yard pass from Bobby
Nunez in the first quarter to
give the Owlets an early 6-0
lead. The other first quarter
Odem score came on an 18 yard
run by . Pete Rodriguez with
4:58 left in the quarter. The
Owlets threatened again in the
opening period when they
blocked a Bullpup punt and
took over on the Banquete 13,
but penalties and a busted play
denied the Owlets a score this
time.
The Owlets picked up six
more points in the second
( quarter to build a halftime
lead. This score came after
Banquete was forced to kick
from their own end zone, and
were unable to get off a good
kick. Pete Rodriguez took the
boot and returned 19 yards to
the pup 13 yard line. Tough
Hugh Guidry took it to the four
but the Owlets were stuck 5
yards for offsides on the next
play back to the 9. Bobby
Nunez then hit Hugh Guidry
with a 9 yard scoring pass. This
tally came with 2:07 left in the
half. -- Halftime score 18 Odem
Banquete 0.
0
Odem scored again in the
third quarter. This score was
set up when the Owlet’s Tracy
Jamison pounced on a
Banquete fumble at the
Bullpup 25. Bobby Nunez found
David Garza open near the
goal line and hit him with a
touchdown pass, Garza’s
second scoring reception of the
night. Little Peter Aguirre
sailed around his own left side
for the two extra points to bring
the score to 26-0 Odem. This
one came with 4:35 left in the
third quarter.
The Owlets final score came
in the last quarter with only 13
seconds left in the game. The
Owlets took over on their on 40
after a Banquete punt and
featuring tough running by
Hugh Guidry and Pete
Rodriguez the Owlets moved to
the Banquete 20 and Pete
Rodriguez went in for the
touchdown from there. Peter
Aguirre again outran the
Bullpup defense to add to extra
points and make it Owlets 34
Bullpups 0.
One of the highlights of the
game was the running of little
Peter Aguirre, one of the
smallest players on the field.
Aguirre added four points to
the Odem total with two extra
point runs, but the exciting1
play of the night was his zig
zagging dash of 50 yards in
which he ran all over the field,
slipping out of tackles and
going across the goal for an
apparent touchdown only to
have it nullified on a clipping
penalty which brought the ball
back to the Banquete 40 yard
line.
The 8th. Grade Owlets, now
2-0 go to Orange Grove
Thursday (tonight) for a 6:00
P. M. game.
