Gleaners Hear Mrs. Greenwood
Mrs. Jesse Greenwood of
Dubai, United Arab Emerates,
was the guest speaker at the
regular monthly meeting and
dinner of the Gleaner Sunday
school class held in the home of
Mrs. Harry Mohrmann Jr.
Monday night.
Mrs. Greenwood, who is here
for a visit with relatives, told of
life in Dubai, where she and
her husband make their home.
He is the Area Manager for
Atwood Oceanic Off-shore
Drilling Co. She says that life in
Dubai is in many respects
much like life in any
metropolitan city in the U.S.A.
She has an all-electric home.
She finds groceries even higher
in Dubai than here.
Weather conditions in Dubai
are much the same as in south
Texas. The city of Dubai is
located in the state of Dubai
and the state is one of the seven
states that make up what is
known as United Arab
Emirates, which can be found
on the map on the far side of
Saudi Arabia and the city of
Dubai is located on the south
end of the Persian Gulf.
Mr. and Mrs. Greenwood
attend church in the gym of the
American school, where in-
terdenominational services are
conducted each Sunday
evening. Sunday School for the
children is held at 4 p.m. each

visitor here in the home of his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde C.
Gay. He completed a three-
year enlistment in the U. S.
Army early this year. His last
year in service was spent in
Korea. He has gone to work
with a Houston construction
company. He enlisted in the
military service soon after he
had graduated from high
school in Corpus Christi. He

plans to perhaps later go into
that field of work.

Sunday. There is no Sunday
School for adults, Mrs.
Greenwood explained.
Dubai, with a population of
possibly 200,000, has residents
from many parts of the world.
Among the nationalities found
in any public gathering are
residents from England,
Denmark, Germany, India,
Pakistan, Canada and the
United States. There is one
Chinese lady living in the area
where the Greenwoods are
located. She is married to an
American. She said that on her
flight in from Dubai the plane
put down at Dharan in Saudi
Arabia, Cario, Egypt, Shan-
non, Ireland and Gander,
Newfoundland before reaching
America. Snow and ice were
plentiful in Gander, with the
temperature standing at five
degrees the day Mrs. Green-
wood spent some time there.
A delicious dinner was
served by the hostess following
the business session and the
speech by Mrs. Greenwood.
Those attending were Mrs.
Greenwood, guest speaker,

Thornton Sr., Mrs. W. C.

But Read Instructions First
Application Of New Auto
License Stickers Simple
Application for new motor
vehicle registration plates is
more simple in Texas this year
than at any time since World
War II.
Instead of new metal plates
the Department of Highways
and Public Transportation
(DHT) is issuing validation sti-
ckers to be applied to the upper
left-hand corner of the rear
plate issued last year. An
adhesive on the back of the
sticker foils removal of the
sticker by would-be thieves --
or motorists who foul up the
instructions for application.
And, of course, there have
been some almost unbelievable
lash-ups by otherwise in-
telligent motorists. For in-
stance:
A motorist in Corpus Christi
was very careful to put the
validation sticker in the proper
position on the rear plate --
except that it was his neigh-
bor’s car. Both vehicles,
parked side by side, were red.
In Amarillo a motorist paid
for his sticker and immediately
went to the parking lot of the
county courthouse. He applied
the sticker to the rear license
plate - of the vehicle owned by
the assistant county tax
assessor-collector. Same
make, same model, same Color
- wrong car.
One woman received her
sticker in the mail. She wanted
to see how well the “stickum”
on the back worked. She put it
on the kitchen table. It worked
fine. She scraped off the pieces
(and part of the finish on the
table) and returned them to the
tax collector for replacement.
Another woman laid her
sticker on the kitchen table.
Her young son picked it up and
put it on his bicycle.
A motorist picked up a
validation sticker to register
his pickup and his passenger
car. He got them reversed.
Two more reissues.
Another motorist went back
to his tax assessor-collector.
He was plenty mad as he
displayed a sticker almost
obliterated with holes. “I’m
having a (deleted) time
stapling this (deleted) thing to
my metal plate,” he fumed.
The information “staple here”
is for information of the tax
collector’s office to indicate
where to attach the sticker to
the registration receipt. He got
a new one.
One registrant bought
stickers for two cars but left
one on the counter. The next
man in line thought he needed
two stickers, so he picked up
the one he needed for his
vehicle and the “extra.” At last
report they were trying to find
him. The first motorist got a
replacement sticker.
A motorist with four vehicles
paid for four registrations. He
applied the four stickers to the
front and rear plates of two
cars. Then he read the in-
structions. He paid for two
additional stickers.
But Texas motorists are not
alone in fouling up. Louisiana
also has initiated the
validation-sticker system this
year. There a tax collector was
explaining how the sticker was
to be applied. He pointed to a
sample plate on the wall, which
had a sticker in the proper
position on the plate.
“Now you put the sticker
exactly where that sticker is,”
he explained. Sure enough, the
motorist quickly peeled the
backing sheet off the sticker
and had it on his thumb ready
to put it on the sample plate.
The clerk stopped him in the
nick of time.
So a reminder or two from
the Motor Vehicle Division of
DHT:
(1) Read the instructions for
applying your sticker. The
instructions are available both
in English and Spanish.
(2) If^ you louse it up,
carefully* scrape off all the
sticker and put the pieces in an
envelope.
(3) Take the sticker pieces,
with your registration receipt,
to the county tax assessor-
collector’s office or substation.
(4) Take along $1.30 for the
replacement fee for each new
validation sticker.
(5) Now, have you got that
right, cousin? If not, re-read
the instructions.
Gardening With Heavy Clay Soils
Gardening can still be
successful in areas of San
Patricio and Aransas Counties
having heavy clay soils, says
D. P. Pawlik, county agent
with the Texas Agricultural
Extension Service.
Seed germination in heavy
clay soils can be improved by
providing a substitute for the
clay soil immediately around
the seed. Seedlings will ger-
minate quicker and grow
better, and consequently you
will be harvesting fresh
produce earlier.
So Pawlik suggests covering
seed with compost, potting soil,
peat moss or vermiculite in-
stead of using the garden soil.
Dig a small seed trench about
one-half to one inch wide and
filling it with the soil sub-
stitute. Then place the seed on
top of the soil substitute, press
it in gently and cover it lightly
with more of the moist soil,
substitute. Providing a better
“seedbed” for small seed such
as carrots, lettuce and cabbage
will greatly improve ger-
mination.
This practice is especially
desirable in a small garden and
can mean the difference bet-
ween success and failure,
points out Pawlik.
