The American Heart Associa-
tion has had its influence on
Throckmorton Hospital this past
week. (Some of our pennies go
for a good cause).
One of our newer R.N.s --
Narcele Malone -- went to
Wichita Falls two consecutive
Saturdays and completed an
instructor’s course in Cordio-
pulmonary Resuscitation. She is
now a certified, bonafied, card-
carrying instructor in Basic Life
Support — good for one year.
Bringing all this info back to Big
“T,” Narcele set up many
instruction times, lasting about
two hours each.
CPR has the following
meaning. (Cardio - heart)
(pulmonary - lungs) (resuscita-
tion - to revive). Also, did you
know that about 600,000 people
die of heart attacks yearly and
only about 200,000 of these
people reach the hospital? And
did you know that your blood
vessels are constricted for 20
minutes after you smoke a
cigarette which may impair your
circulation? Enough of vital
statistics.
Mrs. Malone instructed al-
most of our hospital employees
on this technique as well as the
firemen, Young Homemakers
Group of Woodson, and several
other interested citizens. Each
person was taught how to
breathe for a patient - using the
mouth-to-mouth method — and
how to do external cardiac
massage, enabling the heart to
pump enough blood during this
emergency situation.
The American Heart Associa-
provided a dummy (excuse me,
a mannequin - every time I say
dummy, someone gets offen-
ded). We used Resusci Anne to
practice on and it seems like
with all the practice she would
get REVIVED! Poor Anne was
laying on our floor in the drug
room several days and each time
someone rushed by and caught

We hope to get Resusci Anne
back in six months to review this
again and I’m sure Mrs. Malone
will set up more instruction
classes. I want to stress,
emphasize and say again — this
course is excellent and is not
only beneficial for victims of
heart attack but of drowning,
electrocution or anything that
would obstruct the air passage.
It is NOT too technical - anyone
can learn it. If you were
instrumental in saving ONE
life....
Well, until next time
on breathing!

of with homemade ice cream.
