To help cut food costs, thri
fty shoppers compare prices
and quality at several differ-
ent markets, according to one
observer.
"This week, they'll find
pork prices up a bit, with
scattered values on advertised
cuts, " Mrs. Gwendolyne Cly-
att, consumer marketing in-
formation specialist, Texas
Agricultural Extension Service
Texas A&M University System
noted.
"Watch for good values on
Boston butt roasts, shoulder
roasts and steaks, end-cut
loin roasts and chops, sliced
quarter-loins, smoked picnics
ham portions, sausage and
pork liver, " she advised.
"We used to be pretty much
a steak and roast country.
But now we're discovering the
more to beef than just the
most glamorous cuts. Whole
beef prices reflect this trend.

A flyswatter once changed
the history of Algeria. In
1827 the French consul
was struck in the face with
a flyswatter by the native
Algerian ruler. France
avenged this insult by seiz-
ing Algiers in 1830 and
driving the Turks out.
Thoughts
From The Living Bible
Now I want to ask a favor
of you. I could demand it
of you in the name of
Christ because it is the
right thing for you to do,
but I love you and prefer
just to ask you—I, Paul,
an old man now, here in
jail for the sake of Jesus
Christ. My plea is that you
show kindness to my child
Onesimus, whom I won to
the Lord while here in my
chains. Onesimus (whose
name means “Useful”)
hasn’t been of much use to
you in the past, but now he
is going to be of real use
to both of us. I am sending
him back to you, and with
him comes my own heart.

Social Security
"When will my Social Secur-
ity check increase as a result
of the new law which Con-
gress recently passed?" This
is a question asked frequently
these days of the Sherman So-
cial Security District Office.
Gus Jones, Manager of the
Social Security Office, ex-
plained that the increases tot-
alling 11% are in two parts
of 7% and 4 % and are for the
months of March and June of
this year . Therefore, the
increases will first be reflect-
ed in checks issued in April
and July.
"It isn't necessary to apply
for the increases, " Jones Add-
ed. "They are automatic and
beneficiaries need contact the
Social Security Office later
if they desire an explanation
d£ the amount they received."
"The benefit increases are
financed by an increase in the
amount of a worker's earnings
subject to Social Security tax,
That amount increased to
$13,200 from it's previously
scheduled limit of $12, 600.
The Social Security Office
in Sherman is located at 810
N. Travis. Their telephone
number is 893-4301. Office
hours are from 8:30 a„m. to
4:45 p.m., Monday through
Friday.
THE HOWE ENTERPRISE, THURSDAY, JANUARY 24, 1974
Food Buying Resolutions
week, the specialist said.
"Fryer Chicken specials
continue in some stores des-
pite a cost increase—with
both whole birds and fryer
parts featured."
Grade A large-size eggs,
on the other hand, offer the
best combination of quality
and economy for the egg
money, Mrs. Clyatt added.
Turning to fruits and veget-
ables, the specialist noted
that January is the month for
peak orange and grapefruit
supplies.
"Tangerines, tangelos,
and apples furnish additional
good choices, with more appL
stocks coming from controlled
atmosphere (CA) storage.
"Other fruits and vegetables
in best supply at the most eco:
nomical prices include banan-
as, avocados, grapes, pine-
apples, collards, mustard,
spinach and bulk turnips.
"Also rutabagas, lettuce,
celery, cabbage, carrots, po-
tatoes, broccoli and dry yel-
low onions."
"Food buying" resolutions
for the new year are in order
now, a consumer marketing
expert advises.
Mrs. Gwendolyne Clyatt
cited food as "one of the
major family expenditures"
today and pointed to a need
for wise consumer habits in
food buying.
The consumer marketing
information specialist with
the Texas Agricultural Exten-
sion Service, Texas A&M Uni-
versity System, suggested the
following "resolutions" for
1974:
— I'll learn more aboutfood
so I can fill the nutritional
needs of my family at a rea-
sonable cost.
— I'll take time to get ac-
quainted with normal prices
at more than one store—so I
can recognize a bargain when
I see one.
—I'll build the week's
menu around plentiful, in-
season foods.
— I'll study food ads for
bonafide buys and seasonal
bargains before I go shopping.
— I'll have ashopping list,
but I'll keep it flexible to
allow for "finds."
—I won't buy on impluse
not often, anyway.
—I'll look for net weight
and nutrition labeling--even
if it forces me to bifocals be-
fore my time.
— I'll learn how many
mouths I can feed with a give:
amount of different foods in
their different forms.
— I'll try to avoid wasted
leftovers, and I'll buy in qaiai
tity only when I have safe,
adequate storage space.
— I'll buy for value, not for
premium offers or contest
entry blanks.
— I won't be "taken in" by
gadgetry, fancy packaging
or flamboyant advertising.
— I will , once in awhile
throw caution to the wind,
but only when I—not some
ad man—can say, "Tonight,
to heck with the budget. "
