Tahcr al-Masri.
— The United States is asserting military control in northern Iraq
by warning it will destroy any Iraqi aircraft that threaten Kurdish
refugees or the mercy flights sent to help them. “We are simply
saying that we do not expect the humanitarian efforts to be inter-
rupted or thwarted by Iraqi military, period,” White House spokes-
man Marlin Fitzwater said.
— As many as 2 million Kurds — about half the ethnic grpup’s
population in Iraq — have been seeking refuge along the border with
Iran and Turkey. In one makeshift camp, in Uz-umlu, Turkey, an
estimated 50,0Ci0 refugees on Wednesday had only one doctor —
