ESL, GED Classes
Taught In Odem
The Odem-Edroy Independent
School District currently sponsors
classes in English as a Second
Language (ESL) and citizenship,
approved by the Texas Education
Agency, for eligible legal aliens and
special agriculture workers and
General Education Development
(GED) classes.
Classes began October 6 and will
continue every Thursday from 6
p.m. to 9 p.m. in Room 3 and 4 at
Odem High School.
The classes in citizenship will
enable aliens and special
agriculture workers to obtain the
education requirements listed by the
Immigration and Control Act.
In order to adjust to permanent
resident status, aliens attending the
classes will achieve a minimal
understanding of English and an
understanding of the history and
government of the United States.

PTA Meets
October 18
The Odem Elementary PTA will
meet Tuesday October 18 at 7 p.m. in
the Odem Elemetary Library.
Odem Elementary Principal Anita
Lunoff will speak at the meeting.
She will explain “The Effective
Schools” program.
Babysitting will be provided dur-
ing the meeting, and refreshments
will be served following the meeting.

Elementary Reports Monday Attendance
Odem Elementary had 100 percent
attendance on Monday October 10.
Attendance during the month of
October is used as a measure for
funding for the Odem-Edroy I.S.D.
The district goal is to have 99 per-
cent of all students present for the
month. The official count is taken at
10 a.m. daily in the Elementary
school.

Booster Goals Set
According to President Lucio
Bargas, the Odem-Edroy Booster
Club recently set goals in support of
area athletics including an annual
banquet, two $500 scholarships and a
party or get together for all Junior
High girl and boy athletes.

Odem Elementary school is spon-
soring a contest to encourage
students to be in attendance during
the month of October.
Grade levels kinder through se-

through fifth are working for a pizza
party at Peter Piper Pizza.
Every student who has 100 percent
attendance will earn an Odem Owl t-
shirt which will be awarded by the
school district.

Stage Dessert Theatre
storyteller and satirist Ronald Dahl.
Dahl is the author of some of the
most widely read children’s books
ever published, including Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory and
James the Giant Peach.
The show is being produced for the
fourth consecutive year by Robert L.
Frances, Theatre Arts director at
Odem High School.

Booster Club Elects Officers
The Odem High School National
Forensic League will present its
Fourth Annual Dessert Theatre this
Monday Oct. 17. The show will get
underway at 7:30 p.m. in the Odem
Elementary School Multi-purpose
Room.
General admission tickets will sell
for $2 per person and includes
dessert and drink as well as admis-
sion to the production.
The Dessert Theatre will feature
humorous adaptations of classic
fairy tales retold by master
The Odem Band Booster Club held
its re-election of club officers on
Saturday October 8 at 10 a.m. in the
Odem High School Band Hall.

Odem’s fourth volleyball game
was against the Ingleside Fillies last
Monday October 10. Odem lost both
games away from home 8-15. Their
record now stands at 2 wins, 2 losses.
The leading scorer in the first
game was Laura Haug with a total of
six points. Melanie Gomez and
Jaimie Rodriguez each scored a
point.
In the second game the leading
scorer was Delilah Rodriguez with
five points. The only other person to
score was Velma Ramos with three
points.

Cross Country Team Runs At Cole Park
Odem Cross Country Team ran in
the Whataburger Classic at Cole
Park on Saturday, Oct. 8.
Renee LaWant placed fourth with
a time of 11:11 and Angela Smith
placed 14th with a time of 11:29.

They both received trophies.
Other runners who participated
but did not make the top 15 include

Coach Dawn Wilkin said, “The
Cross Country Team did a good job
Saturday at Cole Park. Everyone is
improving their time and each one is
running constantly.”
The team will run at West Guth
Park Saturday, Oct. 15.
Frosh Lady Owls Win
Game But Lose Match
The Freshman Lady Owls won a
game but lost the match to the
Mathis Lady Pirates in Odem on
Tuesday, Oct. 11.
Odem lost the first game to Mathis
with a score of 7-15, but the Lady
Owls came back to win the second
game with a close score of 15-13. In
the final game, Odem conceded to
Mathis with a score of 9-15.
Freshman Coach Dawn Wilkin
said, “The Freshman continue to
improve their skills as a team, and
they played well.”
