Court petitioned ■;
School info sought
A group of legislators that
includes State Rep. Mark Stiles,
D-Fannett, are seeking clarifi-
cation of the Texas Supreme
Court’s decision declaring the
state’s school finance system
unconstitutional.
A motion was filed with the
court by Rep. Rob Junell, D-San
Angelo. The motion asks the
court to clarify three questions
which are critical to the passage
of legislation to meet the stan-
dards announced last month by
the court.
The questions relate to the
distribution Of one school dis-
trict’s taxes to another: to
unequalized enrichment at the
local level; and whether funds
appropriated last year will be
cut off if a plan is not adopted
by April 1.
“Quite frankly, if these ques-
tions aren’t answered, I’m not
sure the Legislature will be able
to write a bill that will pass the
House and the Senate, or cer-
tainly one that the people of the
state of Texas would want to
vote on through a constitutional
amendment,’*'Stiles said.
Since the court handed down
its decision on Jan. 22, educa-
tion groups and legislators have
offered several finance plans

EOSINOPHILIA
Eosinophilia are a particular type of white blood cell, so-called bacause ot their
ability to accept eosin, a type of red stain. Normally, human blood contains between
one and three percent eosinphils. The medical cohdition called eosinophilia results
when an excess number of these white cells are produced. In some diseases, the
eosinophil count may be as high as 34 percent. Parasite infection is a common
cause of eosinophilia, most notably infestation by ascaria, or intestinal roundworms.
Ascaridia eggs, when ingested by humans, will hatch ih the upper small intestine.
Larvae penetrate the intestinal wall andmigrate to the liver and into the lungs. During
the larval stage, they cause eosinophilia andallergicmanifestations including hives,
asthmatic attacks, and edema of the lips. Several medications are used for fast and
effective treatment.
By making sure that fish and meats are cooked well, and that high quality meat is
used, ingestion to certain types of parasites may be prevented. If you require
diagnosis of allergies, treatment, or a consultation, please contact BAYTOWN
ALLERGY SERVICES for more information or for an appointment, at 425-9369. Our
office is located at 2802 Garth, #209 and is ppen daytime hour*, Monday through
Friday. We treat allergies due to foods, chemicals and gases, contact with plants
and insect bites, sinusitis and stress-related allergies.
When vegetables are grown with "night soil" as fertilizer, they must be throughly
washed, and’preferably cooked.
which are now under considera-
tion.
“There is so much indecision
about the intent of the court’s
opinion that members of the
Legislature are unclear on how
to draft a proper remedy to the
school finance dilemma,” Stiles
said.
Stiles said he hopes the
court’s response to the motion
will provide some light at the
end of the tunnel. He added that
he and his staff are working
with local school administrators
and board members to develop
the most palatable school
finance plan.

CLEAR LAKE — A gender-
sensitive approach to marital
therapy is the highlight of a mar-
ital workshop to be conducted
by Dr. Cheryl Rampage, director’
of graduate education at The;
Family Institute in Chicago,,
“His Marriage/Her Marriage:;
Gender Sensitive Issues in Mari--
tal Therapy,” from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
March 1 at the University of.
Houston-Gear Lake.
Before moving to Chicago in
1989, Rampage spent 11 years
on the UH-CL faculty. She
taught and eventually directed a
master’s degree program in fam-
ily therapy.
The workshop deals with
some issues in marital, therapy
that have too long been hidden
— the different perspectives
men and women hold in view of
their marriage and how therap-
ists can be sensitive to these dif-
ferent views.
Sponsored by The Family
Therapy Student Association,
the workshop has been approved
nuing education credit for
licensed professional counselor
and certified social worker
specialties.
