Pupils learn how
to manage money
Hassan Irshad, who was a fifth-grade GATE (Gifted and Ta-
lented) student at Harlem Elementary School this past school
year, receives a $50 savings bond from Sam T. Schulze, ex-
ecutive vice president of Citizens Bank & Trust Co. He won the
bond in connection with a class project on budgeting and bank-
ing. The bond was provided as an incentive for high dollar
marks in the class.
Student wins
scholarship to
Sam Houston
Kim Easterling, a student at
Lee College for two years, has
qualified for a $500 per semes-
ter transfer scholarship to Sam
Houston State University for the
1991-92 academic year.
The scholarship was awarded
for Easterling’s “proven
academic excellence,” according
to Joey Chandler, assistant di-
rector of admissions at SHSU.
“I am honored to be the scho-
larship recipient and 1 look for-
,ward to attending Sam Houston
in the fall,” Easterling said. “1
could not have received this
honor without the excellent pre-
paration given to me by the pro-
fessors at Lee College. I will
certainly miss all the friends I
have made the past two years.
Students in Jennifer Puckett’s
fifth-grade GATE (Gifted and
Talented) class learned a valu-
able lesson during the 1990-91
school year — how to manage
money.
A year-long project in the
class dealt with budgeting and
banking.
“The project was a practical
way for the students to utilize
both math and language applica-
tion and money management in
real-life situations,” said Ms.
Puckett.
“It was an excellent motiva-
tional tool in that students re-
ceived dollar amounts on their
papers rather than grades.
“The students designed
checkbooks, checks and balance
sheets. Interest was calculated
on money saved and checks,
were written to pay for weekly
desk rentals, classroom supplies
and fines, school entertainment,
payments of debts and other
expenditures.”
During the project, Sam T.

saving money.
As an incentive to produce
high-dotlar grades, he offered a
$50 savings bond to the highest
yielding savings account. Win-
ner of the competition was Has-
san Irshad.
