PASADENA, Calif. — Residents picked through the debris of
shattered buildings while bracing for aftershocks from a powerful
earthquake that killed two people and injured dozens as it rocked
Southern California.
KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — President Bush says he has a
short list of potential Supreme Court justices in mind to succeed
Thurgood Marshall and will pick one within a few days.
ZAGREB, Yugoslavia — Yugoslavia’s feuding leaders agreed
early today to send the federal army back to its barracks and tempor-
arily suspend bids to declare independence, European mediators
said.
WASHINGTON — Gun-control supporters moved a step closer
to their goal of a nationwide waiting period for handgun purchases
when tiic Senate joined the House in embracing historic legislation.
ST. PAUL, Minn. — The man convicted in the mail-bomb deaths
of a federal judge and civil rights lawyer damaged his defense by
giving bizarre testimony that his jurors said was riddled with lies.
Walter Leroy Moody Jr., 57, of Rex, Ga„ faces three mandatory life
sentences as part of his conviction Friday on 71 charges, including
murder. Prosecutors said Moody hatched the deadly bomb plot as a
means of taking revenge against the judicial system for his 1972
conviction for possessing a pipe bomb.
